building a long closet made of six vintage doors
Comments (8)Here is a picture of the doors leaning against the wall I want to use for the long closet. The closet will be two feet deep, which will fit right up against the existing door frame. I think I will put large, colorful paintings the entire length of the wall above the closet---or a mural. I had a builder come in today for an estimate. He said it would work, and he had some good suggestions. I hope the estimate won't be out of my price range; I'll find out in a couple of days. I spent a few hours after he left cleaning the dust and dirt off the doors---they had been in an old abandoned factory for years before they were salvaged. Now, I need to go over them lightly with steel wool and mineral spirits, restain, then revarnish. Wish me luck! Comments (6)Hi sjhockey fan. Thanks for the warning. I have seen both the milky and frosted options in the showroom. I don't care for the stark opaque white of the milky glass. (The laminated option looked better, but for a 30% cost upgrade.) The frosted has a sandblasted textural "softness" to it that I like. I could only see a little bit of clothing color through the frosted glass in the display closet. If it is a problem once installed, we will add Solyx film (or maybe light blue painted or fabric panels) behind the glass to increase opacity....See MoreHow To Emulate This Barn Door Closet (Wall-Length Closet Design)
Comments (4)The barn doors completely cover the opening. Ideally you would have a two inch overlap on either side but I have some that have one inch on either side and they still look amazing. The photo that you have pictured just shows them opened. If you have room on either side of the door for them to slide open then you could have the doors on one rail; which is a lot cheaper. Otherwise you will need a bypass door which is more $$. I got my rails and doors for two closet at rusticahardware.com but I just installed another one today (partially done in my basement where my furnace is as there was no other option) These were significantly cheaper and I bought them at homedepot. Something new that they carry. I'll be making the doors tomorrow. Hope you decide to do it. I love the look!...See MoreBaseboards and door/window trim design dilemma
Comments (3)Mourning’s should be planned as part of the whole concept of the home. If the design of the home is truly Victorian it’s best to stick with Victorian trim. As to ceiling height there are plenty of homes with 8’ ceilings with wider trim as long as the trim is appropriate to the homes style. My last house was ‘transitional’ so we put in 5 1/2” baseboards and 3.5” casings plus 1/2” backband. My office is Victorian with 8 1/2’ ceilings with 7 1/2” baseboards and 4 1/2” casings....See MoreBrittany Phillips
