complete overhaul of ranch landscaping

Hello all,

We recently moved into a small ranch, and I was waiting until the growing season to see what the front landscaping looked like and whether I wanted to keep any of it. Long story short, now that everything is in bloom I see that the front yard is a jumble of flowers, mosses, and shrubs - and we don't want to keep any of it.

We plan on ripping everything out and starting fresh. I will keep the stone walls, and I will likely use black mulch in the new landscaping. Otherwise we are simple people, who like a clean, minimal look. We live in the midwest, where the blooming season is short, so I have a preference towards evergreens, otherwise the front yard just looks barren for 9 months of the year. But I'm not closed off to the idea of flowers or other shrubs.

So, once we bulldoze the whole thing, what will look good in our new, fresh yard?
