Seeds are tiny, not much bigger than grainy dust. Oops! Maybe those were seeds! :) If you can find another dry flower spike tip it upside down into a brown paper bag and shake it/beat it around a bit. You will surely get at least a few seeds out it. Tip - look for new mullein plants around the base of this year's flowering plants. There will certainly be some babies around within 10-20'. While they do transplant, in my experience they resent it and refuse to grow to full height/size after transplanting. They will still flower and produce copious amounts of seeds - and mullein plants will be yours for ever more! Seed can also be had from the online vendors like Richters and Horizon Herbs. napapen, None of the verbascums are natives. All are from regions of Europe or Asia. Common mullein (V. thapsus) and Moth mullein (V. blattaria) are common all over most of the USA however. The latter is commonly found as two different color forms: a white with purple tints and a great yellow. I always let a few plants of common mullein stay in my beds every year as the leaves are spectacular and the butterflies love the flowers. 6 foot is on the small side for a well grown one with 8 foot fairly common. That might be a Mullein, but it isn't common Mullein. I'll show you common Mullein.... It is WAY more downy than show in this pics....should feel as soft as Lamb's Ears and be the same color. I'm battling pulling this weed (a very common roadside weed here in E. WA) outside of my prairie bed after a volunteer popped up. I failed to get to it in time...now I'm regretting it BIG TIME. Just one plant can give you well over 500,000 + pepper speck sized seed and remain viable for decades in the soil!! Also you may find some sites claiming this plant to be native....it is NOT. In WA state and other western states, this plant is named as a noxious weed. No native plants are ever considered. I have several verbascums and love them. They are short, and hardy in our tough winters. But they don't seem biennial, perhaps it's because I deadhead, but I've had some for at least 4 years. I had the wild common mullein seed in my gardens, but I don't like them much. I think you need to get a named variety. Mine would get huge, but only ever have a few flowers blooming at once, never a big blazing inflorescence. It was disappointing, seeing how large they got that they didn't bloom more prolifically.
