Furniture Design Dilemma living room

Need help finding the right furniture!

I have been struggling to figure out the right furniture for my living room space. The placement of the door and steps make it a little difficult for me to decide which pieces of furniture would work well with the space. I am interested in having accent chairs paired at the window but am uncertain as to whether that is the best set up. any and all help is greatly appreciated!!

what about a focal sofa but small on stair wall too? possibly with fairly simple stairs, what about paint or wallpaper going up that wall...

corner could have height of floor lamp...but at night from the street, theres something nice about a table lamp that shines through...like you say: 2 chairs and small table/ lamp. what does area measure?

Like everone else is saying......your best source to find a person who can do this type of work and do it well is by word of mouth. Going to a dealer would be the way I'd handle it as well. Here's the issue the way I see it, however. If it's a 75 year old table, it's going to be depression era. I love furniture from that era, but it's still relatively common, not really antique, and priced far less than what it's often worth. You may end up putting more into the repair than the value of the table, especially if a lot of refinishing is involved. If it's cherry, it's probably been a good set and as you said, it has sentimental value, and it's hard to put a price on that. There are a lot of people in my area who do repairs and restorations, and as moonshadow said, they aren't big outfits, or even have advertising and listed business numbers. Their prices for identical work are also all over the board. You may have to get several estimates, and you need to decide in advance, the level of skill involved in your repair. IOW make it sound and the splits not too evident, or make it look perfect, not including the top refinished completely. I'm so sorry this happened to a piece you love. Many folks don't really understand the concept of irreplaceable or that older things are valuable, as opposed to just old. I suspect your husband feels bad enough already about what happened.

Well, its been over a month and Alice has not posted her pictures, tee hee! Personally, I have fallen in love with the vessel sinks. I saw them for the first time a few years ago in an upscale restaurant (in red). Then, I saw them offered in clear glass which I thought would be hard to keep clean and shiny with no waterspots. But since then I've discovered them in granite and have fallen in love with different colors and veining. My daughter and I have a plan to get one in the bathroom on her level. We are replacing a 4 foot vanity that has some water damage and in other ways is past its prime. I have access to a brand new 4 foot vanity with no top. I'd like to get a piece of granite (and if not granite I'll settle for 6" ceramic tiles) and cut a hole in to partially recess a granite vessel sink. I have found several on eBay that are very affordable.

Commercial kitchen hood bases are typically at 7 ft, or 48 inches above the cooktop. As you go higher, the hood has to grow ever larger to encompass not only the diverging (expanding) cooking plumes, but their displacement due to cross drafts. People moving about are sufficient to disturb the plume trajectories, and any air conditioning input to the room will also do so. At some height, even relatively laminar make-up air will disrupt capture and containment. In the limit, some commercial operations use full ceiling collection with technical means of destroying grease so that all that plenum space is not a cleaning expense nightmare. With larger capture area goes larger required hood air flow (CFM). With larger hood CFM goes larger make-up air (MUA) CFM. These both entail increasing cost and increasing mechanical space requirements, and for the MUA, increasing heating requirements and potentially ever finer differential pressure balance with the outside air. As implied by the commenters above, avoid deviating too far from basic proven capture and containment design, whether commercial or its approximation embodied in better residential designs.

From the left wall going past the front door, it looks like you could float a sofa in that area. The sofa's back would face the left wall. It would create a hallway effect coming in from the front door. On the right side wall, looks like you might have room for a TV console with a TV on it. In front of the windows would have 2 (might only be one based on the size of the furniture) you could put the chairs. The best thing for you to do is find furniture that you like, then you can either draw out a furniture layout on paper or get some blue painters tape and tape out the furniture sizes on the floor and see how it flows for you and if the size of the furniture is correct. Furniture always looks smaller in a showroom so you want to make sure your furniture measurements are spot on for the size of your room before you make any purchases.

One other thought is that you may want to look at apartment or small space furniture. It is proportioned for smaller spaces.

Thank you! @deb I am not sure what that wall measures at the moment.

I was not planning on putting a TV in the living room. I was thinking of putting an electric fireplace in the area where a TV would most likely fit. @tedbixby I like the blue tape idea!
