Flush mount or pot light in its place.

We thought about the pot light but wasn't sure if it would look weird since it is going to be floating in the middle of nowhere.

It would be helpful to have a floorplan with measurements, including windows (with exposures noted) and locations of all light fixtures, not just for the kitchen but also for the nearby dining/living room.

Why don't you just replace the current fixture with a semi-flush or flush fixture to provide as much light as possible in the kitchen? Without seeing a floorplan or knowing what the window/other light fixture situation is, I'd be very hesitant to remove a ceiling fixture in a kitchen. I'd also make sure in the remodel to include general/ambient lighting plus task lighting and accent lighting.

I think we are on the same wave length because the light is facing away and if we have something hanging down I'm afraid it will be out of place.

Track light? Then you could put up as many heads as you need and point them wherever.

From the pix I'm seeing, your kitchen seems to need way more lighting. I would put a can light over the island space, and add several more cans throught the kitchen as well. Use LED dimmable fixtures; and add a dimmer for light control. Also add under cabinet lighting if you don't have it.

Yes, to under cabinet lighting as we are going to be adding some version of it. As for the other lighting it isn't as bad when the other one is actually one. The window is also going to be replaced and we are adding white, wood blinds and the new cabinets are antique white so I am hoping all of those are going to help brighten the space.

None of that will help light the kitchen at night. :) Spend a few hundred dollars and have an electrician wire some recessed lights in your kitchen using the same circuit the pendant is on.

Have the electrician redo the wiring to add pot lights to the whole kitchen you have no where near enogh lighting in the space. I too would like to see a floor plan and if you think white wood blinds are going to add lighting think again .As for the fridge you need a counter depth one and MW hoods are IMO the last resort.Since you have a space above the cabinets you could actually vent to the outside with a proper hood. Maybe before getting futher along post a floor plan.

I appreciate the feedback, I really do but honestly the lighting isn't a major issue for us, aside from my original question. We aren't trying to cut corners but this also is not an overly expensive house so we are trying to keep with our needs, budget and neighborhood. The microhood will allow that as it will free up some much needed counter space, especially since we are losing the gaudy, out of place island. The fridge is a thought, but only after this one goes out.

I would either cap it if you don't need it or have the electrician change it to a recessed eye ball light and add a second one more towards the ref so there are 2 and looks like it was on purpose. Or if easy enough, bring that electrical box into the flat kitchen area as a recessed light.

If you install track lighting, you can maneuver the lights individually to light your work areas. We had the same middle of the room light and replacing it with a track made a big difference.
