What is the perfect size for a two car garage?
Comments (37)You have to decide what you will be storing in the garage... Over flow "stuff" from the house? Do you have a hobby that needs space - woodworking, mechanics, gardening? Do you live in a place where the "mudroom" is in the garage or is it part of the house? Do you store "toys" - for instance keeping a boat in the garage mean you need a taller garage door, so it could fit inside with the tower up, as well being a longer bay to accommodate the trailer length. Or if you live in snow country and have a sled deck on a pick up and want to be able to pull into the garage with sleds on top - again taller door and wider bay. As has been said - the garage can never be too big. :) Also - the width you want may be impacted by the size of the vehicle doors. Generally two door car have longer doors and so swing open wider, while a van with sliding doors doesn't have the same "footprint". Measure what you currently use, and consider what you would like to have to make sure your space is not just a couple feet too tight for your dreams....See MorePros/Cons: 3 single bays -VS- 1 double bay + 1 single bay Garage
Comments (17)I prefer the look of single doors, but the versatility of a double door would win it for me. A double allows you to park in the middle which is helpful in many instances if you want to work on or clean the inside of the vehicle under a roof. It is also helpful when you have elderly guests coming to visit and the weather is bad. Easier for them to get in and out along with any equipment such as wheel chairs or walkers. You could still accommodate the above, but you'd have to make each single bay larger....See Moregarage conversion + new two car garage or build on master suite??!
Comments (2)I can't tell you how much I dislike garages that are in my face in front of an entry to make the front of the house all garage as the first thing you see. But that said I do not like bedrooms above garages either. A garage is not living space so you will need to dempolish the garage and then build an addition just like any other addition. Can you do what you want where you live there are often rules about sq footage of living space in proportion o the lot. As for cost that can only be decided after getting all the info you need and then quotes from contractors in your area. IMO you also need an architect since IMO additions are best when they look like they have always been there...See Moreexpanding driveway to allow 2nd car to pass
Comments (11)I would guess that adding pavers, instead of matching the driveway concrete, is what allows the side extension to happen as that might be considered a "sidewalk." If you want to be able to maneuver around the parked car, I would test some practice runs in the grass. Estimating from the pic you have a pretty skinny and not very long driveway, so watch the swing out in front that might hit the bushes, let alone the corner of the house. You'll also be driving over the curb (not good for low cars). It looks like you'll have to park the car all the way to the sidewalk edge every night, is that ok for security? Alternatively, can you put a stall in the back? Watch the neighbors who have a side extension or ask them. I imagine it is for temporary day parking or unloading (just quickly pull in at an angle) if there is minimal street parking. It sounds like the city would give you a ticket for parking on it overnight....See MoreDavid Cary
