Allergies and Central Vac/ Hide-a-hose in CA bay area
Comments (19)HEPA is not a brand; it is a designation defining a standard of particulate removal efficiency. "By government standards, a HEPA air filter must remove 99.97% of all particles greater than 0.3 microns from the air that passes through." It is a proven standard that is reproducible and is not dependent upon the design of a central vac system that would be inherently variable depending on home design and quality of installation and implementation (actual suction of a central vac is dependent upon run length, tubing diameter and turbulence from non-straight runs) HEPA vacuum filtration has been proven in controlled trials (funded by the NIH) to mitigate allergen exposure specifically in asthmatic subjects. In fact, regarding vacuuming with a HEPA filtered vacuum: "The intervention was effective in improving measures of lung function, reducing the frequency of coughing, reducing the proportion of children requiring unscheduled medical visits and reporting inadequate use of controller medication." In order to claim that a central vacuum would be superior one would have to show that the act of vacuuming with a central vac would aerosolize fewer respirable particles than a portable vacuum and more effectively remove allergen from the environment. I can find no evidence of this and it is counterintuitive that it would, given that the suction of a vacuum is not the primary determinant of aersolization of particles; the act of vacuuming stirs up particles from the leading and trailing edges of the head while suction is directed perpendicular to the direction of movement and aerosolization. So, if they both aerosolize particles equally which one is better? I'll take the one that uses a standardized method of particle removal over one that is installation-dependent. I'll take an evidence-based, proven intervention over a "seems like that should work" intervention any day. Interestingly, HEPA-rated portable vacuums are also the standard for asbestos abatement and nuclear remediation. And I'll state most importantly that the person with the allergies should not be the one doing the vacuuming. Particles can remain suspended for 60-90 minutes after they are aerosolized so the allergic individual would ideally not be in the room for that length of time as well. Obviously the allergic person should not be emtying the bags or canisters whether in a central of portable vac. I always recommend that portable vacuums should be emptied outside as well....See MoreWaht should I do with this bay window?
Comments (4)Thanks for comments, we are doing oak crown on the top of the kitchen cabinets (other end of this 37 ft long room) and rest of woodwork is pine so don't think we can do it everywhere (plus the expense - $2.50/lf at HD). If we tie the stools together (that 1/4" off in depth and 2" distance apart really bugs me!) I'm not sure what we'd do with the apron - 1 or 3? The casing would be the same but only 1/4" wider so no one would really be able to tell they were different from the rest of the house - in fact, I have to use wider casing on doorways in kitchen b/c the door heights on cased openings didn't match the prehung door casings but if I wanted the same reveal I had to go wider (and builder told me I was seeing things). As far as the light, I'm not crazy about it but we wanted something close to ceiling so out of the way of the tree. Box is actually in front of bay, not in it. And builder put in fan box, holes were not perpendicular to walls so couldn't hang a track like we have in kitchen (with smaller lights instead of pendants) as we originally planned b/c the 8 ft track would have been crooked. Don't want a round flushmount but chandy would be too low (8 ft ceilings). No ceiling fan b/c I think it would look strange (current ceiling fan is in line with track over kitchen island, slightly off from center of bay but other box is centered in front of that window). So the modern fixture with the curved arms hides the fact that it's not mounted square to the walls. Any suggestions (pictures!) for replacement light that fits all these requirements would be GREATLY appreciated. Oh, and we like that we can point the halogens where we want light instead of straight down....See MorePossible new Box Bay window- logistics and who installs?
Comments (3)1)That could be a problem, or it could not. It would definitely need a more in-depth analysis. 2)Yes, that is correct--- although I have had to fight local inspectors on more than one occasion about the 9sf. 3) I do not know of any, this sounds like a custom carpentry job to me. 4) Are you trying to cut down on heat gain or take advantage of it for the colder months? That would dictate the type of glass package that would be best for you. A professional would be able to assess what would be most beneficial in this regard based on the unique circumstances of your home. 5) In my opinion a window specialist that also is knowledgeable and experienced in custom carpentry would be the best bet. Windows on Washington is a tremendous company, I would definitely consult with them to see if they would be a good fit....See MoreNew Draft of SF Bay Area Home
Comments (16)Even if you don't install grab bars now, if you want to later, you want to plan the major plumbing so that you can. Swapping the toilet and sink will give you the wall space to be able to install grab bars. I usually am not interested in 2 doors to a single bath, but in your case, I'd prefer to have easy access to the powder from the main family entrance. But, it is good to know what you want/don't want. I can see not wanting the only entrance to be through the mudroom. (But, one possibility I would consider is swapping location of the closets in that block with the powder room, and then making the only access to the powder through that "mudroom". When you do that, you get closet nearer the front entrance, as well as the ability to close off the mudroom and still have guest access to the powder. And, you hide the powder a bit more from your front entrance.) Just an option. I really like the elevation....See More8mpg
