severe cane damage, please help! (with pics)
Comments (4)I got a back ordered rose this spring from a well known own-root vendor. The rose stem had a hole in it and there were signs that it was healing. I had never seen this before, and e-mailed the vendor, with pics. I got a phone call within 10 minutes. The vendor said that they had switched to a new potting mix, and the roses were taking up too much water and splitting, and that this wasn't a long term problem for the rose. The vendor also advised me to plant the rose deeply enough to cover the slit, which is the exact opposite of my instinct..I would have thought it would be vulnerable to disease buried, but they said no, it would either finish callousing over, or produce roots, and that was what I wanted. There was only one cane, so pruning it wasn't really an option. My pics aren't exactly like Shelly's, but it was healing when I got it, so maybe her soil holding too much water could be the problem? Just as a side note, I planted it as instructed in mid April and it is thriving. Comments (3)I'm a bit jealous. I STILL haven't seen a Gulf Frit in my yard this summer and I was sure with the early spring, that I would see some. Still plenty of time I guess....See MoreHere come the tomatoes!!!
Comments (6)Hi Kelly, I always try to get the plants out in the garden during the first week of March and with exception of a few rows, I had them all planted by March 10th this year. Hello Debbie, there are many factors directly associated with where you live that can dictate how often and how much to irrigate your tomatoes. Soil type along with climate varies a great deal from one location to the next and will require you to adjust accordingly. Tomatoes don't like to sit in water saturated soil and yet tomato plants that are grown in soil that is kept on the borderline of being completely dry can bring about other issues such as Blossom End Rot. As others have discussed here, probably the best method would be one that allows you to water the plants as deep as possible. This would really be advantageous in areas where high humidity and temperatures are experianced - not sure what the climate is like in your area. Some suggest letting the plants tell you when they need water by observing when the folaige just start to droop but I can't do that where I live as if I did do that, I would end up with Blossom End Rot on an epidemic scale. I keep a watch on the soil and check the soil moisture by pulling back a bit of soil and observing how dry or moist it is along with how far down. Thanks John, how far along are you with your tomatoes? Jay...See MoreFrustration!
Comments (2)Jim, I am sorry about your coon troubles, but I had to laugh. We had racoons 2 years ago which climed the arbor at my neighbors house and left their scat on the garage roof! He put a Have a Heart trap out caugth the younger racoons and the mischievious one moved on to our car and left his presents in the well where the windshield wipers are. I put crumbled alu foil there. He pulled it off. Used plastic chicken fencing crunched up. It just made the clean-up harder, because now I had to wash out the fencing. After a daily battle with the boar, he finally went after the cat food in the trap and my neighbor brought him about 4 miles out. 1 month later he was back. He finally caught him again and brought him abouts 50 miles in the next county. For a while I had a handicaped racoon. She came every evening for her dish of catfood and left the garden alone....See Moreorganic_kitten
