carsonheim The cal door quote is unfinished solid maple. We were having everything site finished so it all would match but I'm thinking they offer primed doors for not much more. I hope you have as great an experience as we've had! I think it all depends on how devoted your crew is... our guys are just rock stars. They NEVER cut corners, even when I think they should! :) imjustagirl I do have some new pictures... site finishing has begun! I was planning on starting a new thread since this is getting long. Wow, I know this is a bit of an old thread, but Kitchenredo08 I don't know if you post or read here any more, but, my kitchen looks to be exactly the same footprint wise as yours! How weird to be searching for IKEA kitchens and come across an alternative universe! I haven't posted here in awhile. We're past the planning stage and beginning the doing stage now. We're going with Adel Beech. Kitchenredo08, we scrapped the peninsula that had been in our old kitchen. It was horrible and had upper cabinets that blocked out a lot of the light from the deck patio doors as well. The counter top also had no overhang for seating! Your peninsula looks great, but our old horrible one left a bad taste in my mouth about them so we're going with an island instead.Our fridge will be near the patio doors, our sink is under the window. Our stove will be on the wall your fridge is on. We have the same door you have by the fridge (goes to our garage) and 90 degrees from it we have a door to the basement so we're not planning on putting anything on that other wall right now. It makes that corner too tight. So weird to see an alternate version of our kitchen online! All these IKEA kitchens look great! Just the inspiration I needed. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed right now. We're just finishing up installing the floor (marmoleum click) and then it's on to the cabinets, but all the boxes piled up are beginning to look like a mountain! Thanks for the inspiration!

I'm enjoying churning over the challenge of your kitchen. I think I'm going through withdrawals now that our house is finishing up. This is an idea with the constraint of keeping plumbing in place and not removing walls. Here's what I did: 1) tried to get as much distance between the sink and the range as possible without moving utilities 2) Added a wall at the entrance to the family room that is the same width as the wall on the other side of the entrance; looking from the family room toward the kitchen the walls framing the opening should be equal widths. 3) Angled the island parallel with the wall with the existing laundry so it looks intentional and also create more comfortable counter seating for 3 kiddos. 4) To add storage,but not do anything that competes with the ceiling transition to the morning room, I added base cabinets to the morning room side of the kitchen proper. It's essentially a big peninsula with no seating. 5) Be mindful of Ice-Water-Stone-Fire. The mantra that has changed the way I will evaluate kitchens forevermore :-) I'm going to see if I can plug this into the IKEA planner quickly

Well, you are all so helpful. Pippabean, I went into your link and had no problem moving the cabinets. Then I went into my design, and suddenly it is working! Benjesbride, I want a desk with a work surface. I just need room for one person at this desk. I have modified my design, and here it is. Now I see a concern: is the height of the base Sektion cabinets at all appropriate for a desk? I don't see how to check the height of the work surface inside the planner. I spoke with a local experienced Ikea installer, and he didn't mention that there would be any problem making these base cabinets into a desk--I hope he didn't misunderstand my intentions. 1. One issue is that the lateral/right side of the cabinetry will be partially visible through that opening in the wall opposite the window. That opening is how the builder left this room open to the living room. and there are 2 steps up into this room. How is that going to look to be able to see part of the side of the cabinets-and is there a design solution, (like perhaps wall off this area)? 2. Does this thing I designed appear attractive? Perhaps it needs fewer base cabinets...? 3. Does it seem strange that it doesn't go to the ceiling? What would you do--take the cabinets up higher? Build a soffit? Attach nice crown molding?
