Please Help Me Understand Plumbing in Basement

House was built in 1950 with septic field. Kitchen sink emptied into dry well. House was hooked up to sewer before I bought it in '91. I removed a sink w/s trap in a corner of the basement and when I look into the drain hole it seems to just go into an open area of unknown size and I see standing water a couple of inches down. I guess I expected there would just be a pipe. Is this normal or some kind of old fashioned plumbing??

There's a floor drain in the opposite corner that looks like it was put in when the sewer was hooked up, and the kitchen sink now drains down a pipe that goes into the floor about a foot from the floor drain.

Yes, I'm pretty ignorant about this kind of plumbing - any help greatly appreciated!
