Sedum makinoi 'Ogon' - is anyone growing it?

Can you tell me your experiences with its cold-hardiness? The label and the Web say it's a Z6 plant, but I wonder if it would make it through our winters with it leaf-mulched? It's such a delightful wee gem. Pic from Dave's Garden.

I am not sure about it's hardiness - I had it and it didn't survive first winter in my zone. Obviously, there could have been other reasons...:)

I think of sedums as the jeans of my garden. I have a few favorite pairs and they're all pretty serviceable but nothing fancy. Ok angelique is a standout and I would love to grow ogon(I don't think it's hardy enough though) but they're still kind of just workclothes. Does that make me a plant snob? I guess. I did almost add a couple more this fall. They all looked so nice and healthy after the heat of summer that I have to say I was tempted.... but I resisted. Ok so maybe I bought maestro. It's a nice dark leaved upright with bright pink flowers, but my favorite is still AJ.... although neon is bright. Has anyone grown the party hardy types such as beach party, birthday party, pool party?

Thanks for the reply. =) Which other sedums do you use? I have balloon flowers, but they burn in the heat of our full sun here. I have them in partial sun and they're happy, but that wouldn't work where the irises will be. Geraniums are rotters here if not potted. We've got too much humidity for them to be happy in the ground; they like lots of airflow around them. Blue flax... I've never tried it, so that's definitely one to investigate. LOL, reading my response, you would think nothing grows here at all! We can grow plenty... but zone can make such a huge difference. My sister-in-law is envious of what we can grow when she comes to visit from Ohio, and the reverse is true when we go visit her. I guess we always want what we can't have, eh?! ;-) Ev

Love this little plant with its chartreuse coloring. Needs more water than most other succulents and for me 5 years in a row lost to high heat and sun. Best if in bright shade. Not sure about its cold-hardiness. They sometimes sell them in flats here at some BBstores. Let me know if you want me to look for some to send to you.

Regardless of the particular selection or species, I find sedums don’t appreciate mulch, particularly in cold weather when the mulch doesn’t dry out. So I would expect that mulching it for the winter would be likely to induce rotting even in sedums that are fully hardy, based on my experience.
