in need of advice for good overhead light for small kitchen
Comments (2)A four foot, 32W T8 tube puts out somewhere between 1500 and 2500 lumens, depending on the particular tube used. A 75W incandescent is about 1200. So a pair of four foot tubes will produce somewhere around twice as much light as what you've got, use half as much electricity, and reduce the cooling load in your kitchen. Make sure you get a fixture with a high-quality electronic ballast (There's no excuse to buy magnetic ballasts.) and tuves with a high color rendering index (CRI), which is a measure of how much like daylight the light produced by the tubes is. You should have no problems finding high-efficiency tubes with a rating of at least 85. (CRI is a much more accurate measure than color temperature, which is an absurd measure for line emitters like fluorescent tubes.) (Oh, and while it's a kitchen, the lights have nothing to do with flour.)...See MoreKitchen Overhead Light Suggestions Please
Comments (9)Thanks a lot for the responses thus far. I'm not even sure what to look for at the lighting sites since there is so much selection. I guess I forgot to mention what sort of style or finish we're looking for in my original post. A stainless / brushed nickle finish would be best since it will mathch the stainless appliances and stainless or chrome faucet. I like the idea of the Jetson Island one in terms of being supported off of a couple of wires, but I don't like the "shade". I would want something that light can shine through. Downlighting is what I'm trying to avoid since I'll have potlights for that. I like one posted above with the nickle frame, but it hangs too low (also a bit too pricey... :) ) I looked at Restoration Hardware earlier (thats the only lighting site that I can go to without being overwhelmed). I like that rectangular shade, but I'm worried it would get grungy after a few years. Anyways, thanks a lot so far. Hopefully someone can point out the perfect light for me. Comments (14)Update on the transformer and dimmer issue. The retailer sent a 60 Watt transformer to test with an ELV dimmer instead of the magnetic one. It's tiny, smaller than the dimmer and much cheaper, like $65 instead of $200 for the 150 Watt transformers. We got the package via UPS on Monday (not Next Day Air when sent on a Friday) and the lights worked fine but the dimmer did not work. The transformer was installed in a wall space near the ceiling. Today they disconnected the transformer and installed it all a different way, with the transformer installed behind the dimmer/electric box. It all seems to work with the exception of one bulb that won't fully dim. I'm just glad we have lights finally. They will install the kitchen lights once the additional 3 transformers arrive, which should be tomorrow....See MoreNeed chandelier/overhead light suggestions
Comments (6)The picture is misleading. The beam doesn’t hang over the bed—it is just past the foot of the bed. Still close, but not directly over....See MoreTricia Sills
