When you move any plantt from inside to outside, you need to gradually introduce it to full sun or they can sunburn. I don't see anything wrong with your Aloe. It should not be bright green living outside unless it is in full shade. Aloes change color in response to light levels, water availability, heat, etc. It is a stress response, but does not mean the plant is sick. I actually like the grey/brown color more than the bright green it turns inside. I've got one outside that looks very similar to yours outside. Your conditions inside are abnormal. Remove the plant and give it fresh soil and pot. It needs far more sun, it comes from, they believe from Northern Africa. (those who studied this species) I live in a hot arid inland valley , I grow mine in the sun. Don't move the locatiion quickly or you will burn the plant. Don't let the tips touch the glass windows. I notice that you are from Scotland. For sure the poor plant will need more sun. The leaves should be stiff and growning upright, and not spread out. L.E. What I'm getting at is that is loves the heat, and good sun. Make sure it is growing in at least a gallon size container, with good fast draining mix. Remember to fertilize, give fresh air to breath, it will need good air circulation. The dry tips could be caused by a drying out of the soil, too much water, to much artifical heat. So many things come into play. Many species naturally grow with dry tips. Sansevieria come to mind. Norma

By all means you can just bury that stalk in the soil with a fair amount of drainage material added. A deep pot is great but if you should desire to just use regular pot I would follow up with top dressing to help the plant's stability. I do enjoy flowering Aloe Vera at this time of the year!

Other than the fact that you're demonstrating wonderfully the principles of restrictive plant growing? What b says is correct, but if you want it to grow more, sucker, and flower, repot it into 50/50 ratio of cactus soil and pumice or perlite into a pot a size or two larger (or, if you like that pot, depot, trim the roots, probably severely, and repot into fresh soil). Most Aloes will still enjoy several months of good growing in Texas before summer.
