Are my newly viburnums dead or dying?

I re-planted these established sweet vibunums a few weeks ago but they now look like they are dying? can i save them?

For a shrub that is supposed to be evergreen, they sure don't look very good. When you say "re-planted" what do you mean? Lack of a sufficiently large rootball when transplanting and doing so when the shrub is still in active growth can be a serious handicap to re-establishment, so transplant shock is to be expected.

But this looks like it might have gone beyond that point. All you can do now is keep the plant well watered (but not overwatered) and hope for the best. I don't hold out a lot of hope, though.

second pic.. the back plant.. looks like you dug a one foot hole for an 8 foot large shrub...

i suspect dead..

but you could water them for a few months.. and see if the releaf ..

it is not uncommon to lose all leaves in a not perfect transplanting ... if you can save and grow some ne2w roots.. the plants may recover ..but due to the size fo the plants.. it might take years for them to look good again...

they will not like great in a few weeks or months... so it may come down to whether they will be pissing you off so much.. you just dont want to look at them ever again.. in which case.. remove them ....

if you mean you just bought them.. i hope you have a warranty.. so talk to the seller.. and see what they say...

"I planted 3 Miss Kim Lilacs in my yard late in May." May is pretty late for planted trees and shrubs. With pot-grown material, it is do-able, but isn't ideal. It certainly requires diligence with monitoring soil moisture and watering when necessary. I planted according to the directions on the tag, and prepared the holes well, backfilling with a mix of bagged topsoil, compost, and native soil. The instructions you depended on were incorrect. It is almost never a good idea to amend backfill soil. Whoever wrote those instructions apparently didn't know much about planting woody plants. "I watered them after planting, but then we left town for 8 days." Without knowing what type of soil and drainage you have and how much it rained, we can't know much about whether this was a problem, but it definitely is a red flag. "One thing I did not do was separate the roots when planting...maybe this killed them?" I'm not sure exactly what you did from your description, but you probably helped your lilac more than hurting it by addressing any pot-bound roots. I don't think your problem lies here. The only thing I can suggest is to lift the plant and inspect the root ball- it is possible that it was pot bound and you didn't separate the roots enough to be able to wet the rootball thoroughly when you water. Water will not penetrate "ball o' roots" and no matter how much you water the plant will dry out. It's also possible that this one was planted too deeply or settled more deeply than the others. It is possible that masonry containers have leached into the soil and made your pH too high. Why just the one? I dunno. A pH test would rule it out. It is possible that someone dumped a vendi latte on it- who knows. A photo would be helpful. All you can do is ensure that it is planted properly and take care of it. FWIW I would never ever feed a plant that was not actively growing. If it was me I'd snag another PJM as backup... What sort of tree is it planted with?

Replace the dead trees, 15 dead out of 65 planted is not great, but not the worst either. The soil may be too rich for conifers, try ordinary native soil for the replacement trees, don't disturb the other trees that have taken. Moreover, don't fertilize new transplants, it would have the undesired effect of stimulating the growth of foliage, whereas they should instead grow the roots they lost when they were dug up. Note that these large transplants have to continue their lives with as little as 5% of their roots. Good luck!

Thank you to all, especially Sara Malone, Embothrium, and Alley Cat. We’ve been more vigilant about watering deeply with a hose at the base and will continue to do that until Thanksgiving and for the next 2-3 years. Our soil tends to clay which may have a finer texture than what was in the original potting soil. The tree was planted in the Spring and gets 7-8 hours of sun mostly from the east. Some of the roots were cut to promote growth before placing the tree in the planting hole. So will hope for the best and be patient. My concern had been that cutting off the leader – even a dead one – would lessen the chance for a new leader to grow. Other than being unsightly, would leaving the dead leader on for a while longer be a detriment? A source for insects?
