Help! Need advice on Aloe Vera plants!
Comments (4)em4plants, Hello! My aloe vera was my first houseplant; my mom let me pick out something at the nursery when I was about 12 years old, and that was the one. I still have it, amazingly. It's been through a lot as I've learned how to care for plants. The most important thing my aloe has taught me is to absolutely NEVER overwater it, especially in the wintertime. Mine isn't that thrilled with me because it wants more light, but it's gotten so big and unruly I have to keep it where it fits, which unfortunately is currently in a north window. So, really porous soil that will drain well, minimal watering, and lots of light. As for your growing habit questions, I'm not sure about that. I wish mine would do the upright thing more than it is! We can never be satisifed, can we? lol FF...See MoreHelp! Browning aloe vera! (pics included)
Comments (9)Your Aloe will be much happier if you mix 50% Perlite in with 50% soil. It will drain better, not retain as much water and won't compact around the roots. Also, it is better for the plant to be dry rather than wet. When in doubt, don't water. ; ) Maybe it's my eyes, but I don't see anything wrong with your plant. You have probably realized that you should ease your plant into the sun so it doesn't burn. It's kind of like your first time getting a tan in the spring. All at once and you will burn. (well, maybe that is just me! LOL) The plant can change color in the sun. Some show quite red, other brownish. Here is an example of 2 Aloe vera plants, one getting much more sun. Both are healthy. And these Aloe juvenna really looked dry and crispy, but they weren't. It was just the hot and dry autumn weather. I think your plant will be fine. Change the soil and look at the roots at that time. Then ease it into the sun. Everyone will be happy!...See MoreAloe Vera plant needs help please
Comments (2)They seem to do that when too dry, they loose the gel in the leaves and fold in. As said above, make sure to have it in a pot with good drainage. Since it's the older leaves I wouldn't worry too much. Just leave it alone until the leaf turns all crispy brown then can be removed....See MoreI need help with my aloe vera!
Comments (4)C&S soil mix sold in stores is often not as well draining as it should be. That's why many ppl using it add lots of coarse perlite. Most, that use it for succulents, will add 50 or 60% of perlite. I am assuming there is a drainage hole in your container since I see a saucer. Is there? Rocks in the bottom will not improve drainage, but proper mix will. I water all my succulents (do not grow Aloe vera, but have number of different aloes) much more often. They should be watered thoroughly, and potting mix should drain well and fast to allow excess water drain out and not stay and keep soil waterlogged. Check your mix by using a bamboo skewer or chopstick. Insert deep - 3/4 deep or even more - into pot and leave in for few minutes. If it is clean and dry when pulled out - time to water. Otherwise, wait. Indirect sunlight may not be enough....See Morebirdsnblooms
