I grow a few Romanticas, do I need Peter Mayle
Comments (10)Oh yes, everybody should want a Peter Mayle. He is gorgeous!!!!! Deep pink, more often described as HOT PINK! You can easily spot him across a crowded garden! Big fat blooms. Good old rose fragrance. Excellent disease resistance (well, for a hybrid tea, that is). He's not real quick on the rebloom, but about "average" so not too bad. His only real weakness so far is that excessive heat (like triple digit) for long periods of time (like a month or more) take all the vinegar out of him. He has been putting out very few blooms the past couple weeks and they are all heat-damaged (smaller, half-formed). It wasn't this hot last summer and I don't remember heat damage occurring on Peter Mayle then. For a hybrid tea, he is not that tall and wide--maybe 3-4 ft tall and about 3 ft wide. Mine, in fact, are a bit on the skinny side--but very attractive. Now the only thing I would worry about if I were you is hardiness. According to helpmefind, he is hardy only to Zone 7, but he has no serious problems here in my Zone 6. I just don't know about your Zone 4. Helpmefind often lists Zone 7 as a kind of all-purpose default zone--so it is hard to say how serious to take that. Definitely check around for what other sources say about Peter's hardiness. Anyway, I had two Peter Mayles and last year decided I liked him so much that I bought a third one. Not many of my roses come in triplets, so that should tell you how much I like him. He's a real show off and a really cool rose. Kate...See MoreGrow light....what do I need to get please?
Comments (15)I'm new to grow lights as well, but I had to get something as I have many seedlings that are in their first year and not supposed to go dormant. I ended up getting a T5 fixture, 4 lights, 4 feet long. It was $98 including shipping on ebay. (That's for shipping in the US, I don't know about other locations)From what I read the T5's are the newest type of tube grow light, supposedly more efficient and better than it's predecessors the T8 and T12. These are also supposed to stay cooler than many of the other types of lights, not as expensive as the LED's, and the wattage is higher than what Home Depot and the box stores sell and also beat their prices too. For my budget this seemed like a great option. You can get vegetative or bloom lights, for me I got vegetative. My boyfriend saw the size of this thing and thought I paid $300 or $400!!! LOL!!! Thank goodness I got to tell him it was nowhere near that!...See MoreKale is getting leggy even under grow lights - what am I doing wrong?
Comments (11)"For instance, growing kale seedlings at 80F sounds like a recipe for failure - this is a cool-weather crop which would not appreciate anything over temps in the upper 60s. The same advice applies for growing most vegetable seedlings, including tomatoes." Did you read my previous comment about the effect of light and dark temperature differences on stem length? Did you ever try growing a plant with a higher dark period temperature than light period temperature? I did by growing tomato seedlings with lights on during the night and lights off during the day in a greenhouse. See http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/2005610/how-to-easily-supplement-fluorescent-with-incandescent-light. I was struwwelpeter then. I call your attention to the following: "In hopes of keeping plants stocky, I will try to keep the average dark temperature higher than the average light temperature. To do this, the lights are on only from 6 PM to 10 AM. The greenhouse heater is set to go on below 55 deg. F. and the greenhouse ventilator fans and shutter are set to go on at more than 95 deg. F.. I am aiming for 80 deg. F. light temperature and 95 deg. F dark temperature." "To my amazement, these tomato plants are shorter but heavier looking than their greenhouse grown counterparts. The weather was mostly sunny, and, my Gro-Lux bulbs are decades old and used. Who would have guessed?" "Left to right, daylight, Gro-Lux, Gro-Lux Plus Incandescent. You can read the variety on some of the tags. The pots are 4.06 inches diameter at the top outside. http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/BigZac3.6.jpg http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/BestBoy3.6.jpg http://www.general-cathexis.com/images/VelvetRed3.6.jpg The biggest difference is with Velvet Red (which some people claim is the best tasting cherry tomato that isn't sweeter than a normal tomato). This is the first time I have grown it. It is supposed to have bluish foliage and fuzzy fruit."...See MoreDo I Need a Grow Light?
Comments (20)Misting inside a covered container a couple of times a days doesn't keep anyone cool. It just keeps the humidity high. Sunlight strongly illuminating a container like that will just make hot steam. The only way misting keeps anyone cool is if there is the opportunity for the water to evaporate. When the humidity is 100%, there won't be any evaporation. The issue is not that seedlings pre-germination don't need to be in sunlight. They just don't care if there is any light at all. Shining light on buried seeds has absolutely no effect. I agree with floral_uk that supplemental lighting is not absolutely essential. As I said, supplemental lighting is only as bright as a cloudy day outside, so keeping the plants outside and open to the bright sky at all angles would give them enough light. But sitting in a window allows only about half the sky to shine on them at best, and perhaps mostly a cloudy sky. The main advantage of supplemental lighting is that the "day" can be a lot longer. At higher latitudes, maybe even two times longer....See Morebosewichte
