I posted about my house a couple of times over the last year. We finally got it done.

I did break to cardinal sins of buzz we keep the shutters and painted the down spouts the color of the trim. If the windows were bigger we would have skipped the shutter. The downspouts stayed the trim color mostly because no one could give me a definitive answer on how to handle the transition from siding to facia and soffit, and the vast majority of house here do not paint the downspouts. The biggest change was the walk, we are very happy with it.

I have considered using a rug, but with the holidays quickly approaching, I will wait until January to think about it. I'm not sure how to coordinate with the rug in the LR since the whole area is an L-shaped LR/DR. I also like the ease of clean-up and the ease of moving the chairs with the felt pads with the bare wood floor.

Epressler - all I did to figure out which hardwood to get was learn which floors were the hardest (on the Janka scale), decide which colors I liked best, and then ask the owner of the hardwood store which brand he loved the best. He said that all the installers LOVE Owens Flooring, and it has a really thick face to it, so it can be re-sanded three times. It was a good choice, because out of 24 boxes, only two smallish pieces were not straight. Anyway, you asked about how many samples I looked at to get the right color - just two. Brazilian cherry has so many colors to it anyway, that the samples you get may be vastly different than what will be in the boxes. It's hard to believe that one type of tree can produce all those colors! But my goal wasn't to match the cabs to the floor - it was just how it happened, because I guess I really love that color of wood! Chitown_remodel - here is a picture of the backsplash without flash, and the mother of pearl tile is made by Olympia. Dianalo - your idea is brilliant. That is EXACTLY what we will do. Now here's a question, if you happen to ever read this (or anyone who has an opinion) - we already have a very pretty mirror above the fireplace in the great room. Should we move that to the mudroom and put a painting above the fireplace, or is it OK to have two mirrors? Msmagoo - I designed the kitchen myself, and I was helped out quite a bit because I used ideas I learned here on the kitchen forum. For instance, we have a cell phone charging drawer. It's nothing fancy, but it wouldn't have occurred to make one - I read about them on this forum. My ceilings are eight feet... and you might get sick if I told you how much we spent. I will say that I got great prices on the appliances and wood floor, and fair prices on other stuff. Tiny primary bedroom refresh — with Before & Afters

Thank you all for your help back in February! I’ve finished the room, and here are the Before & Afters. Photos are hard to get in such a small space, but hopefully it gives you the idea! Same bed, new art. Same sheets, new duvet cover & blankets. And a new cleaner wall colour (SW Shell White). Mango wood drum bedside tables to soften the edges; salt lamps on dimmers to provide enough light for reading, and an Apple Homepod Mini to use as alarm clock & speaker. Cellular blinds instead of the sheers. And springtime outside, instead of winter. Tidy new closet door, and fewer objects on the walls (nothing except the two paintings above the bed). And last but not least, those alcoves are gone! The photo doesn’t do it justice, but now the wall just disappears, and the room feels bigger. Again, thanks for all your help! I really like how it turned out. If you see anything else that it needs or any style faux pas (… yes, like the even number of paintings above the bed), I’d appreciate your suggestions.

You did a nice job. House looks great. I do like shutters on your house, and I never saw the point in painting gutters and downspouts, a different color. Everyone has them, so its not like it is something unexpected. There isnt a single house in this entire area that has painted their downspouts. Downspouts have a nice baked on finish, so no point in turning them into maintenance. Well done.

I like the color combination. Especially the orange door. If this is not a duplex, I would suggest adding house numbers next to the main door.

There is an overall increase in it looking more inviting. A significant part of that, IMO, is not just because the walk is wider, but it looks like you raised the grade slightly so that the step at each stoop is a friendly 6" instead of an unfriendly 8". Am I reading that right?

I would be remiss if I didn't remind you that the multi-trunk tree at the right side looks unbalanced on account of those two left-leaning limbs. I wish those would go away! :-)

you are right about the grade yardvark
it was raised, and now I keep lifting my foot too high when I step up! and I can't bear to take any more off my tree! I am going to cut the rhody way back as soon sa the blooms start to fade.

That's funny, you wanting to step up higher. I'm sure you'll adjust well to the new height in short order.

"I can't bear to take any more off my tree!" Like most then, you will eventually do it after it is way long overdue and a larger, more destructive job and for which you must wait longer for a positive final outcome. I guess that's the way we like it. :-)

Exhibit A in the importance of a good walkway. Nicely done. After many, many years on GW (I don't post here very often), I've realized that the correct answer to 9 out of 10 landscaping questions is not a plant list, it's advice to widen and rethink the walkway. I know it's what needs to happen at the new/old house my husband and I purchased last year. The previous owners did many things right, including building a lovely deck and patio area, but they didn't do the walk while they were at it and it needs it. It's at the absolutely top of my hardscaping to-do list.

We really saw how important the walk was when my 80 year mil came she has son=me mobility issues and needs some one to walk next to her from the car to the door.

I think the other thing is most have driveways and every one goes in out through the garage even guests. Our driveway and garage are not easy accessible to guest and most of our company parks on the street out front so getting that walk right was important.
