Need help decorating above the fireplace!

Design dilemma- I live in a rental, and I can't move the mirror above the fireplace. I thought a wreath over the mirror or layer with knick-knacks or art. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Or cut down a print and use double sided tape to adhere it to the mirror. When you move, simply take down and remove any remaining tape residue with GooGone.

Of course you can remove the mirror...just put it back when the lease is up and you move on.

Or do you mean the mirror is permanently fixed there?

I see barnaclebob's concern that the enclosure could lengthen the carry path, moving things from the stove to other areas but where would one typically go with a hot dish? Either to a cold burner to cool a bit or directly to the table I suspect. In either case the sides shouldn't get in the way. I personally like the look and the walls should help direct flow of air from the cook and up the vent. As a bonus, wouldn't it now free up the side counter space for things that normally couldn't be kept close to the stove side...spices, paper goods, anything that would be difficult to clean food spatters from? I tend to agree the mantel looks good empty. You could add a seasonal decoration special occasions or maybe a sleeping cat that would be appropriate for a warm spot.

My First suggestion would be NO mirrors below the mantle..that will not be a good addition for this space...such a beautiful space you have with the vaulted ceilings. If possible I would continue the brick on both sides so the fireplace continues all the way it will give it some heft and balance out the room with the vaulted ceiling and beams...if this brick can not be matched I would add brick and paint out all the brick to match....add a big colorful piece of wall..since you have acess to electrical on that wall I would bring it up to both sides above mantle and install wall sconces.

Find a painting that is bigger than the mirror and hang it over the mirror.

I actually really like the look of the mirror. It's all too predictable to see a painting about the mantle.

If this were my living room, I would surround it with other things. You could place a small clock in front of it or some art next to the fireplace, like you can see here.

I can also see what other posts are saying about covering it, but I feel that would make the room feel much smaller. Mirrors help make rooms feel a little more open,

A mirror should reflect something interesting or be used to view yourself. It's going to reflect the ceiling, wall and ceiling fan. The OP never returned, so I guess our suggestions/opinions don't really matter.

Thank you for all your suggestions, and I absolutely value all of your opinions. I have not commented because my brother passed away and my attention was on him. I am sorry it seemed that way.

I kept the mirror up with a wreath, and put a clock in front like i-dex said. Great suggestion!!!!! Thank you. photo coming soon!
