I started my bins with hand cut boxes. I would just sit in front of the TV with a utility knife and slice boxes up into 1" squares. Eventually I got really tired and used a shredder I had (Staples Mailmate) until it broke.

I purchased a $100 Royal shredder from Sam's Club and have been using it for years. It is much easier than sitting and cutting it up myself. Any shredder that does over 12 pages should work and you can find them used a lot of times if you don't want to buy new.

Thanks for the recommendation on the shredder I will look in to getting one soon. So far my worms appear to be happy in their first tray that has Coconut Coir and cardboard. I try just to check on them once a week. But as I get the next tray ready I will look in to shredding those Amxxon boxes I've been collecting.

I mostly use newspaper and corrugated cardboard (CCB) and the occasional cardboard.

Newspaper and cardboard can go through the shredder but not CCB. I use CCB to line the sides of my bins (ribs going vertical). In a large bin (2' x 4') I use 3 layers, smaller bins less.. This help absorb extra moisture, add extra air and give worms a place to hide or help get cocoons off their neck. In a couple weeks time or whenever a layer started to break down, pull that out and replace with fresh pieces. They will be very easy to rip by hand into strips and these have been primed to be perfect bedding.

When lining the bin, I cut the CCB (easy to cut along the grooves/ribs) in about 8" pieces width by whatever length could be accommodated by the depth of the bin. The 8" is important because it will make it easier when pulling the damp/soggy one out and put the fresh one in. I can use bigger chunks for the 2ft x4ft bin, easier to manoeuvre the contents.

HOWEVER, I have to warn you that CCB is also a favourite breeding place of Fungus gnats.

Thank You for information and tips 11otis. I'm only using about 1/10 of bin as CCB. Right now mostly cut up in 1 inch squares. Most of each tray is just Coconut Coir with small amounts of food. I will keep an eye out for fungus gnats.

If corrugated cardboard is too thick to go through the shredder, then just separate the layers until it fits. I have found a way to get cross-cut quality shredded cardboard from a strip-cut shredder. Cross-cut strips are approximately 2" long. I cut the cardboard into long strips 2" high, then I tear them every 2" so I have squares 2" x 2". When they go through the shredder, they come out as 2" strips - just like cross-cut. More work but better quality and besides, being retired, I've got plenty of time on my hands.

There's a site on YouTube called 'Belfast Worm Farm' where the guy runs egg cartons through a blender to get really fluffy bedding. He claims to get amazing results with his worms. Worth a look.
