Need help deciding on a 30' all gas range
Comments (10)Sealed burners have taken a real beating here on GW by all the open burner fan-boys. I too, wondered if I hadn't missed out on something after I installed a DCS AG. Then those same fan-boys posted Youtube videos of how "easy" it is to clean their cooktops, which absolutely convinced me I had made the correct choice. Firstly, all sealed burner ranges are not created equal. I'm willing to admit that there likely are ones that distribute their flame pattern up the sides of pots, and cook spills/overflows into carbonized cement on their burner decks. But I don't have one of those. I have a DCS. It has two sizes of burners - 17.5K BTU, and 12.5K BTU. My smallest pot is 6" in diameter and the flames of the smaller burner stay under its base, even on max. My other pots/pans are 8" or larger, and I use them on the larger burners. All burners are capable of very low simmer - perfect for rice, sauces, or holding extras for 2nd helpings. I mostly clean the deck with a damp sponge. Sometimes I need to use a plastic scrubby first, and very occasionally, something requires scouring with Bar Keeper's Friend. The burner heads come apart really easily, but I've seldom needed to do so to clean up. The oven has an infra-red broiler, convection fan, and rolling racks. I've never noticed how hot the door gets, but I'm sure I'd have burned myself often if it overheated. I'm not the only DCS owner who posts here, and we are all very happy with our ranges....See MoreTrouble deciding on Range; when everything else is purchased
Comments (9)=== I've never cooked on a Blue Star or most of the other "upstart" brands, such as NXR, Jade, Five Star, Capital. Many were just too funky for me in one way or another, or aimed at a market segment that values convenience features and appearances more than I do. === sfjeff, I think this is the first time I've ever heard Bluestar linked to the phrases "convenience features" and "appearances" here. :) I'll agree with you regarding Wolf and the comparison between the original Wolf vs the new Wolf but not sure I can get behind the American Range argument. If anything American Range's residential product is more "gentrified" than many others you named. They don't even have any open burner offerings in the residential models. If you are comparing their commercial line with other company's residential products, I don't think that's a fair or valid comparison. IMHO, the very brands you dismiss completely as "upstarts" are actually those that provide utility over image. Bluestar, Five Star, and Jade all have residential open burner options. From a pure cooking performance standpoint, I'd have to say that open burners are a must. I have yet to hear an argument for sealed burners providing better cooking performance than open. Sealed burner advantages revolve around ease of cleaning (convenience) and appearance....See Moreneed help deciding on 36' range!
Comments (17)Stay away from Kitchen Aid, they're in denial as it regards issues with their ovens. In 2004 we purchased the Kitchen Aid Dual Fuel Convection range and have regretted the high priced purchase ($2800) ever since. Experienced nothing but problems, repairs have been numerous, the door is still lopsided after repair broke two, can't clean the oven without having to call repair afterwards, and now the oven is once again inoperable. The same problems continue to plague the machine, again and again. As of tonight we've decided to dump the stove. Dinner was burned while the temperature was set to 350 and the broiler engaged. Even with the control knobs turned off the broiler continued and the door locked, which resulted in the food or pot knobs/handles catching fire and necessitating disconnection of power. My eyes are still burning from the smoke. After waiting until the oven finally cooled, we turned power on and the safety lock finally disengaged, but even with the controls turned off the broiler once again turned on. This is not the first time this has happened or the first time this issue has been addressed by repair. Tired of calling repair we learned that sooner or later the broiler won't go on, and all will be normal for months at a time. KA suggests turning the breaker off and calling repair as it is a fire hazard. Been there done that, but after numerous repeated repairs KA still refuses to accept that the unit is a lemon or that they're selling faulty equipment. Now we're out of warranty. Figure that during the first year of ownership KA paid more for warrantied repairs than we originally paid for the unit, and due to repairs we were without an oven for approximately one-eighth of the short life of the unit. KA might look like the one you want, but remember - looks don't always matter....See MoreNeed help with Range Hood Color Decision-How Did You decide?
Comments (12)Yes, as Sayde notes, I have a red range and hood. It's not on the FKB as yet. But it's here: To me, you're either up for a red range and hood or you're not. I think that's why, as Breezygirl notes, you won't see that combo around these parts -- or anywhere for that matter-- very often. I recall labeling that design decision as having taken "the plunge." I knew for sure that it would set me apart from the crowd and that some would see it, judge it and hate it. Others would see it and love it. But most of all, it was what I loved and wanted! BTW, the inspiration for such came from Redrange, a former active member here on GW. Once I saw her fantastic kitchen, I was convinced it would be more than alright to solicit and listen to the advice of the crowd but in the end, to follow the beat of my own drummer -- one who was insistent on banging out a red range and hood rhythm for my kitchen. I've never since regretted getting down with that beat. :-) I do hear your concern about what to do if you ever change out the range. To be honest, when I began this reno, I went into it thinking that this would be my forever kitchen in my forever house. As such, I did not put much worry into the "what ifs" with respect to moving, appliance failure, resale, etc. In the end, that may be short sighted on my part. But, for now, and for as far into the future as I can see, I'm living in the kitchen of my dreams -- red range, red hood and all! :-)...See Moremegkantar
