First Daylily to Bloom this Year

Kiss of Paradise opened today. It's the first one in my garden to bloom. After a cool night, the flower had trouble opening flat, and its petal color was more yellow than the creams I remember from last year. It's the first one in my garden to bloom. Last year Victorian Garden Heaven's Applause and Sailing into the Blue started the show on May 17.

Well, you know I like the yellow color better then the off white so it looks pretty good to me. I've got some scapes popping up too. Shouldn't be too long now. Hope it's after all this rain passes...........Maryl

Well, I would kinda prefer the cream version myself, but this looks great too :) I am looking forward to seeing more of this one. I like that thin edge.

I went and picked out that stone myself at the stone place. They had so many different kinds but thats the one I really like. The terraces gardens I worked on some again this spring. Put annuals in as I did last year on the first terrance and those nasturtiums again on terrace three. They grow and spill down the wall and it looks so pretty. I also had to re-order and plant new hummingbird mints in that terrace because last years died overwinter. My fault really as I put lots of leaves over them in the fall as mulch and those packed down wet leaves kept them wet overwinter which is a no no. They need excellent drainage. Will not be doing that again. Then I had to dig up and move all the last row of daylilies in terrace two, the ones up against the wall that the nasturtiums hang down. It really was poor planning on my part as I didn't think of the obvious, which is that they shaded that last row of daylilies. So I filled in more of the middle section in that terrace mostly with the moved plants.

Thanks everyone for looking and for the nice comments. The rose Gentle Giant will open to almost 6" and still look full. I have a lot of scapes up and looking forward to some great blooms.

Beautiful! I just love your garden path with the mossy look between the stones. What is the short white flower blooming? I used to dislike white because I could never get a good picture of any flower that was white. But I have found that it is a great color for balance and it pulls all the other colors together nicely. I am starting to use it more in my garden. Vickie

Another bloom on SARATOGA SPRINGTIME yesterday. I din't even bother to take a picture of it as it was down on the ground on the worlds shortest scape, just like the other shot. I also had a bloom on COUNT IT ALL JOY which is one of the 2009 intros of Karol Emmerich. Its one of these sort of counts scapes as the scape was there but much smaller of course when it arrived. That one I did take a picture of but my pictures from yesterday are not downloaded yet.

Once it heats up, Kiss of Paradise is really pretty. The bloom is huge - 7.5 inches. Unfortunately those big blooms are on short scapes again this year.

Don’t you hate it when you have those monster blooms on scapes so short you wonder how they hold the bloom? This is a nice first bloom.

Kate - The scapes are not horribly short - 25-26 inches. They're just not the 35 inches on the registration. And to be in the back row here, the scapes need to be taller to be seen once the plants in front of it start blooming.
