your peonies are just fine. my dad used to mow over my mom's peonies every summer & they came back just fine in the spring. & we are in zone 5. just give them some more time as this spring is a little longer in coming than in past years. & having been planted 24 years ago, they are very well established so no worries, they will come back.

I think you did just fine planting it as and when you did. My only concern would be the different exposure coming from the growers greenhouse into the full sun of your garden. If that were to be a problem you would know it within the first few days. I recently bought a very large, very full, VERY CHEAP, peony from Costco. When I was finely able to get it out of the pot the soil was as dry and hard and fully packed with roots as I have ever seen. With the plant in bloom and so packed with stems I was afraid to do anything drastic to the roots. I just planted as it was in my peony bed and soaked it well. The next day it was wilted and I soaked it again. The weather was cool and not much sun. It took about two weeks of babying to get this peony to stop the periodic wilting. This fall when the plant goes dormant I will dig it up and break up the root ball, divide it,if called for. I guess the lesson is a plant may have a good reason, for being CHEAP. Al

If you could just find a place to replant them until next spring, they should be fine. If at all possible, move them by clumps without disturbing the roots much so the foliage can grow, you might even have bloom next spring. Not the right time of course, but if you want to save them, you do what you have to, & may very well be surprised at how well they do. I divided mine years ago right after they bloomed & still got some bloom the following year. That was before I knew not to divid in spring & not to plant too deep. They can handle some abuse.

I agree but also think the second one could be a little deeper. Light and warmth such as your area has been having will cause buds to swell. Many peonies buds will swell at this time of the year. Yours do need to be planted deeper. You should have time to dig and replant before the first snow if you hurry.
