I'm planning my new sofa to be between 7-9 feet wide consisting of 2-3 recliner seats and a chaise (similar shape to my current sofa in the drawing) and I may or may not keep the sofa table. The fireplace is a nice centered focal point and I was thinking it might help make the room feel balanced to get a rug that fits in the center of the room with the fireplace as the guide. Do you think rotating a 8x10 rug would be weird? The sofa would only have 8 feet to sit on though - not sure if that is weird. Either that or a square rug (8x8) that I center to the room and put the furniture around it (with just the front feet of the furniture on the rug)? I keep looking for examples and I just am not sure what to do.

You went about this project in reverse. Paint is the last step in a decorating job because it can be custom blended to work with fabrics (sofas, chairs) and textiles (rugs.) I would have bought the rug first and schlepped it (or a small version of it) around to the furniture stores to select the upholstered pieces. Once all chosen, the paint store would be my last stop. Since you didn't do that, see if the painter left a partial bucket of paint and get some foam core to paint a sample on. Same for the color on the FP brick. Grab a cushion from the sofa, a sample of your flooring (if you don't have you may get at the store it came from) and head to the rug shops. Take measurements of the room and of the sofa with you. The ideal area rug, IMO, will be lay 12-18" away from the FP hearth, will slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa, and will extend past the ends of it by a foot or so. You can tape that out on the floor with painter's tape to get the measurement. If your measurement is not a standard size rug, then go up one size. Let the rug specialists guide you in choosing something with a pattern to help break up the monotony of a beige/gray space.

What is the reason you do not want to continue using the metropolitan grey? If you are looking at resale in the near future I would recomend keeping to one color or lighter/darker versions of the same color. Grey is a wonderful neutral and would be good to stick to so you don't end up with that "bag of skittles". Also, posting photos of the rooms in question would really help.

I am totally willing to go 6x9, that particular rug is from West Elm and like I said it’s already my third rug. I would be happy to take any suggestions. I want to be under $500. I am in NYC so I have to do everything online. Also as I had mentioned, the pic is misleading b/c it is a wide angle iPhone pic so everything looks squeezed in. Please believe when I say 9ft width is the widest I can go. Thanks everyone for your help. Please list any suggestions here. I think some navy blue in the rug could work.
