Victoriajane, I love your house, it's beautiful! kec01, thank you so much for posting that link, it's amazingly helpful. Victoriajane, we have a 1898 home, not as fancy as yours, but I've been hemming and hawing on colors as well. Our small stained glass is similar in color to yours, our larger one (will put photo below)is similar in that the dominant colors are flipped. Most Victorian colors were earth-toned, but with that, I think in the 1890's it was really almost anything goes, so it gives you a bit more licence to do what you'd really like. I would suggest sitting with paint swatches right by the window and pick 4 that you really love that go with each other. I second slateberry's drabby color suggestions and would put those with the right "feel" of light- read lucy's warm- cool suggestion, next to the appropriate windows. Then would maybe "pop" the dining room and/or parlor with brighter jewel tones. For the wall around our larger stained glass in the hall, I wanted a warm neutral (yellow-brown) to pick up the yellow light that comes through the window, also to make the cooler blue and cooler pink to pop. Here's what I have (forgive the quick paint job, I am indecisive with paint and need to live with it a bit before committing): the paint color is SW stonebriar (which is close to BM Shelburne Buff, also close but yellower is Chestertown Buff): In our livingroom, I wanted something deeper but classic and neutral enough to go with my red velvet and gold brocade victorian furniture. I think I'm going with SW Bunglehouse Grey- it's a arts and crafts color, but since that's an offshoot of Victorian, I'm not too concerned. That's close to BM Kingsport Grey and BM Nantucket Grey. It's actually not at all grey, despite the photos: Again, please forgive the lousy paint job, it's not the way it will look! Let us know what you choose, I'm still totally undecided about the dining room and would love to hear what direction you went in!

Hi funcolors or whom ever is reading, I think I am catching on...recommending pumice/lighter color will compliment the white couch and give a nice balance. Where... if I were to go with Moondance/darker color with more saturation, the contrast would be greater and the white couch would then become more of a focal point. To keep the mural the focal point, staying a lighter color would put the focal where it needs to be and balance the couch in the room more? So, if I were to put a refinished piece of furniture directly across from the mural wall that will have the couch against it. I am guessing I would want to do a color with a bit more saturation to anchor the room or balance it? I haven't painted it yet...still trying to figure out color the right way. Maybe the depth of Moondance or a bit darker? Or would I want to do a very light color to keep the room light and airy with not to much contrast against the paint on that side of the room. I am guessing darker? Not super dark, maybe a medium depth of color? Thinking maybe: Hmm, actually I am not sure. Semi-gloss for sure, using Pumice on the walls and it being a warm color, my carpet being cool, I am guessing a cool tone, one of the medium colors pulled from the mural? Or a nice rich medium brown? Suggestions? Color sure isn't easy when you want to get it right. It is a console/chest/buffet style piece. Flat screen will be wall mounted over it and decor on top of it. In terms of the pony wall at the front door. People do take them out a lot, but it defines the entry and creates a place to put a piece of furniture much closer to the door than you would if the wall was not there. This definition of boundaries can be important, especially in a small house. I would select a rug first because that will give you some color direction. You may find only a handful of rugs you both like and can afford, and paint colors number in the thousands.

Hi every be! Thank you for your comment. We recently purchased this house. The room was a former porch thus the low ceilings. the previous owners added the flooring which was a big hole near the rounded windows where there was originally supposed to be a spiral stair But was never finished. There was a 1/2 inch gap between the windows and the flooring. My contractor suggested putting a baseboard to connect the space Thus the reason now there are baseboards. The size of the baseboard was determined from the hallway as you enter the room Thus the reason for the larger base. This room will be a laundry/exercise studio. It is on the second floor overlooking the backyard. The low ceilings were a concern to me since I did not want to feel closed in. I was originally thinking a dark color like medium blue thus the paint color on the wall, but I think it’s too dark. Now I am open to suggestions. The house was built in 1920 and is a craftsman Style. My colors in the house are SW alpaca with shell white trim. The dining room is SW Oceanside blue. I do live sherbet orange with pink and have a room in current house in that color. I am thinking of same color ceiling and walls but can’t decide to go with the alpaca or a light green like SW kind greeN. If I go with color walls should the trim be painted a dark color or light color Like navy blue? Or light color vertical lines? Any help is appreciated.
