Sorry, but I don't think dialing back the watering 'a bit' will be enough.

Sounds like maybe your care is too much, overnurturing, both water & fertilizer, pls stop fertilizing. You may not know this, but Haws are vulnerable to root rot to begin w/. Unless you unpot to check the roots, I wouldn't be so sure it'll be fine. I suspect it's soaking wet underneath.

I unpotted it, the soil was dry but some roots were dry and hollow (is this what root rot ends up doing?). I cleared the dead looking roots, washed the existing roots and repotted in a succulent mix instead of the Miracle Gro potting soil I had originally used. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Pls don't wash the roots of succulents especially those already vulnerable to root rot. When unpotting, repotting sucss, one wants to work DRY & allow a day or 2 before watering for roots to heal from being cut/ trimmed, etc.

What's in the succ mix? Did you add Perlite, that is an absolute must as succ soil alone will NOT drain fast enough or properly.

Don't mean to sound so fussy, but some of us have learned these things the hard way.

Cut off the rotted roots and like Karen said - allow them to callus a bit before repotting. No water until it starts putting out new roots.

PS - Haworthia fasciata is very easy to grow. Watering is okay when it is actively growing and/or outdoors but do let them dry out before watering again.

The idea is to drain any excess water after you water it.

Here is my mother's for example a week ago and it gets heavily soaked from rain and the watering can from time to time. A bit overgrown but she has had it for years.

Here is a slightly different Haworthia I picked up at Target 3 years or more ago in a small pot without drainage and has magnets glued on the backside for hanging on a refrigerator. I water it maybe every two weeks in winter and drain away excess.

a different Haworthia limifolia striata (not the normal dark green form) was another Target kitchen magnet except my wife dropped it on the tile floor and the little ceramic pot broke. It is now in a small glass candle holder - again no drain hole.

The last of 3 I bought from Target is probably an aloe but showing the mounting magnets.

This is the time of year (actually started a month or two earlier) where you can pick up tons of different succulents at the big box stores. Most are in some kind of potting mix that is not all sand and perlite though.

When they get too thick then it is time to divide them. Here is H. limifolia green or normal form.

and I potted them individually in MG potting mix. Here are 3 of them.

Eventually as you pot them up to bigger and bigger pots you get things like this.

They do best with neglect. I gave my mom a 6" pot if some from babies off of mine. She put it in a window behind a curtain and forgot about it for 3 months, it was thriving. I have to throw a bag full away every year or it busts it's plastic pot it's in. I usually water once a month, maybe a little more in summer, 10" pot.
