Trader Joe's Article: Good News & Bad (for me) news
Comments (26)There are 3 TJs sorta near me but none close enough to shop at regularly. One sells no liquor at all & the other two only sell beer. So, no cheap wine. The one we usually go to is out-of-state & in an old dreary strip mall. The store is disorganized & dirty. It's a very depressing place to shop. We rarely go, maybe twice/year. I suspect the other two stores are nicer but they are a lot further to drive & in a direction we seldom travel. We are supposed to get a new WFs within five miles but it's at least a couple years away. People here are very complimentary of TJs but I really don't have much good to say. Ours is just the pits. Well, I do have something good...the people working there are friendly & helpful. :) /tricia...See MoreWhat do you like at Trader Joe's?
Comments (289)Yesterday I finally made it up to Trader Joe's. I went armed with a list compiled from the huge thread here of TJ favorites. Of the five or six "must haves" on my list, they were out of three---Rosemary ham, cooked lentils and scallion pancakes. I did get a tarte d'alsace for DH, organic tomato and roasted red pepper soup, and orange champagne vinegar from my list. I also purchased chicken and apple sausages, which we will have for dinner tonight with pasta, various crackers and other items. I forgot my cold food carrier so I bought one of their zippered, insulated totes which I will definitely use a lot for other purposes. When the checker asked why I was buying it and I told her I lived pretty far away and had never been there before, I became an instant celebrity. She rang a bell, welcomed me to the store, gave me a beachy patterned carryall for my groceries, a bag of plantain chips which she said was her favorite TJ snack, and a bouquet of flowers! We've tried the plantain chips and have sampled the roast beef, olive and fig crackers, some other kind of round pale yellow seasoned cracker., hummus and various other foods. They were all good except for the "organic vine ripened tomatoes," which were as hard as rocks, mealy, and did not taste anything like a tomato, and the plantain chips, which taste like I imagine chicken feed would taste. We've yet to try most of the things I bought, but except from the lovely warm welcome I was underwhelmed by the experience. On the up side, I now feel a bit less like I am missing out on a great culinary treasure trove living so far from civilization and I see that nothing can touch the home grown produce I am so lucky to be able to buy from pickup trucks that park around the courthouse on Saturdays. If anything we've bought proves a must have for me I will enlist my daughter to pick it up and bring it down, but I won't be making any more special trips....See MoreWhy should I buy from Trader Joe's?
Comments (86)I have never been in a TJ's that had several rows of frozen foods, and we have a few that aren't far from us. I don't think it's a big deal to access the crackers and cookies over the frozen foods. Unfortunately, I am able to easily grab the boxes of Jo-Jo's. ;) The parking lots are always small and awkward! I thought it was just around us because the stores are in urban locations, but I guess not? I think maybe we oversold the whole TJ's experience and you were disappointed, Oakley! I like it for certain things, but to me it's not the greatest store ever. I doubt that I'd go too far out of my way to shop there. Forgot to mention earlier that my kids used to love Nutrigrain bars, and TJ's has their own brand that are basically the same and so much cheaper. That's one of the items I've stocked up on there....See MoreNew item for me from Trader Joe's
Comments (44)@Olychick, you're so right about all that. They go well beyond the call of duty. My most recent encounter was with one of their half turkey breasts. My husband put it in our cart, and we didn't notice there was no price sticker on it. Of course the checker noticed and said, "No price - no charge." I've told this here before, but they sent my elderly stepdad home one day with his bag of groceries after he'd left his wallet at home. "No worries," they told him. Then they wouldn't let my mom pay for the items when she went back. Like you, I'm so pleased with their well-deserved success!...See Morerhizo_1 (North AL) zone 7
