what old finish turns white with denat alcohol?

I'm trying to fix up a side table that has lost large areas of finish. I guessed it might be shellacked so I hit it with alcohol to see what it did. It turns the finish a chalky white and puts a little reddish smear on the rag but the finish still appears intact except for being now white. It's not getting gummy. (It's one of those ~1920s-40s pieces with the red stain.)

Is that typical shellac behavior? I have worked with old shellac before but this seems different.

Thanks!
