with out doing a bunch of structural changes there are a few cosmetic things you could do.

There is a lot of wood. so you could stain the lower wood ( rails floor trim) a darker color to make it look less like the ceiling. Personally I have never been a fan of shiplap but a lot of people are. I did however have a client that white washed her ceiling to make it look more like a beach house and it looked nice with the decor she had ( lots of shells and beach things nautical etc)

another easy fix would be to change the wall colors. getting rid of the stark white might make the home look more inviting. a suggestion on a color would be like a off white in the cream family it will work with the flooring and ceiling.

I am 100% on board on changing the kitchen cabinets- I dont think they are the right color or style to go with the rest of the house. And honestly that is the one area that IMP needs to be changed. a Shaker style door with some nice stream line pulls would be very modern.

I like the fireplace but I would stain the mantle a darker color.

Maybe just staining the pillars and the stairway a darker color might break up the wood tones.

The triangle light- thats neat but I feel that it doesnt fit your personality. so change it.

as far as the outside- A lot of homes have it where you have to walk up stairs to reach the front door, and im guessing if you are to be utilizing the garage there is a way to get in to the house from the garage, so its not a big deal that visitors would have to walk up a few stairs to get to the door.

These are all my opinions, ultimately its a matter of what you would like in a home. :)

Wow. That'a a lot of angles that are emphasized by the wall/ceiling color contrast. But that's what the home is and I don't think lessening that contrast is ultimately going to do a lot - maybe not enough to make it more palatable for you. My instinct would be to minimize contrast and make it more monotone so the emphasis is on 'room' shape and what's beyond the windows rather than the eye being stopped by all those contrasting angles. But it would be a major undertaking to paint or whitewash all that ceiling, not just because of the expanse but judging by the sheen of the ceiling in the photos there is some kind of poly or varnish or something on it. The kitchen...? I'm not seeing shaker at all. Ultimately you have to ask yourself if what you are drawn to - the view - is enough to override what you DON'T like about the house. It is what it is and changing paint colors or cabinet door styles is not going to change that.

I think the word "ugly" is a very strong one and I'm not sure changing flooring or colors or whitewashing is going to make you think the house is beautiful. It could be the basic structure of the house that you feel is ugly. I think only you can decide what you can compromise on in order to get that view. Personally, I'd also have to get rid of the road and other houses I'm looking at in order to live in a house I don't like just for the view, but ignore me because I'm picky about what makes for a great view. :-)

I would balance the heavy design with a midcentury modern furniture style to balance it out and see how the house speaks to you when you are settled in. - the current owner has allot of competing styles so its just hard to look at. get rid of the blue carpet ! If budget allows remove those wacky picture frame windows and make one grand window or doors to outside.

I know that if I don't like the architecture at all- I won't go for a house.

Should at least speak to me. Should be some dialogue going on. "Ugly" will be "quirks", to me. Something along these lines.

This is a house that needs to be lived in for a bit to get a handle on what would work for you. Your home has a lot of soul! You might want to start with baby steps. Taking too much original away might be disastrous. If it were me I would start with painting the wood trim around the interior windows. You do not need them outlined as there are so many and so many sizes. Start with that. Then, decide what else assaults your eye the most.

Do not plan on changing it all. Just try to make it so the eye has a relaxing place to land.

A few tweaks and you will have the coolest house ever!

It's an architectural interesting space, and to paint that wood might not only be unrealistic you might not even be able to do it - it looks sealed pretty well, i.e. the ceiling. Instead of painting the wood, perhaps try painting the walls to decrease the contrast to the wood. You've got a lot of windows and fabulous views, enjoy the light.

I agree totally with April. I love all that wood, but not the kitchen. Yeah, I'd change out those railings somehow. Just embrace that "cool" vibe.

The view is great, but the house is a terrible design. Way too many random design features all pushed into this envelope.

Paint is not going to fix this place. The problem is in its DNA. It will be a money pit.

It's so funky--I love it! But I'm crazy. If you're looking for "beautiful" and white shaker cabinets, I think you'll drive yourself crazy trying to get this to work for you.

What was the original designer smoking??? LOVE the Location but odd angles boggle my mind too much to contemplate the finishes. If you can live with those, then take your time changing colors. Actually the colors, wood and stone didn't bother me, but the window shapes...... Maybe replacing those walls of multiple small windows with a solid wall of glass would help.

I would not change the wood, trim, ceilings, or fireplace. They are all a part of this houses design. The kitchen doesn't belong at all though - I think a white kitchen could look great here. I also think the house will look much better with the right furnishings. I would keep the hardwood floors, and use a slate look tile for the entry and kitchen. Wait until you see how you will be redesigning the kitchen before you do anything with the floors.

The one thing I'd do right away is paint the trim around the windows the same color as the walls. The "framing" of the windows makes the trim stand out so you see the window instead of the view.

If I could afford it, I'd replace the triangle and trapezoid windows with single larger windows to try to calm the place down. I'd probably replace all the small squares, as well.

How about replacing those pipe-looking stair/balcony rails with wire ones? I think that would lighten up the space and make it look more modern; the pipes look 80s to me.

I cracked up when I saw those little square tetris windows -- they look like they're supposed to mimic the shape of the deer head antlers. :D

On top of what I mentioned above...here’s some color palette ideas. I think this house could be amazing inside. It will take $$$$$ though.

I'm with others... i love it the way it is. And if you don't, then I don't think you ever will :(

Remove all random dressers and china cabinets. It needs about half the furniture and wall art. Less of all furnishings and decor, including prominent (ahem) light fixtures.

The entry/foyer might be neat with half the couches and a rug centered on the door...

I’d want to see it empty before I woukd be able to consider it. The style wants minimalist quality not clutter I think. I am maybe not neat enough for that style :). To me, It’s hard to focus on the house with all that furniture going on.

The house marries traditional lodge style (lots of wood and stone) with modern architecture that is designed to make the views the star of the show. I think that if you aren't willing to embrace that aesthetic, this isn't the house for you. You may be able to minimize the wood somewhat--Oly's suggestion to paint the window frames to match the walls sounds like it an idea that would highlight the views. But painting the ceiling? No. I also liked Emily's suggestion to replace the pipe railings with wire. They would be visually less intrusive in a house that already seems to have a lot of visual noise.

I love all the ideas here. I agree no painting of wood- reducing wood furniture and things in general, as well as the removing or reducing/painting trim to interior windows. Its built to be a perch for viewing the fabulous view. Id even considered mirrors...in combination with darker wall colors, perhaps blue like the sky and lake, with well placed mirrors, maximizing the viewing experience. Adding warmth on the floor, with richer tones, darker wood, add amazing lighting features, and real pops of color here and bold, like a volcano, not shy. Let the house do what it is meant to do, celebrate that vista.

yes, it could use some changes, but I think it's spectacular and would totally be up for that challenge!

first thing: I would paint the siding dark grey with black trim. I'd change all railings to a sleek horizontal metal rail, like this:

on the inside, I'd chip away at some of the details a little at a time (such as the front door). this home could look great with Scandanavian type decor.

eventually the bigger stuff will need to be addressed....but live with it for a while until you really know what you want to do. I don't love the carpet, floor tile, or the kitchen countertops.

I do like your cabinets though. it's hard to envision how I'd make that wood color work in that space. maybe it would work if window frames are painted white. (normally I'd be for keeping the wood frames natural, but there is already SO much wood in here.)

I really like this house and a lot of the features and architecture. Please do not paint the ceilings or whitewash that gorgeous stone fireplace! Those are really stunning features that work well with the mountain modern style of this house. I think the house will look much more up to date with fewer and more up to date furnishings. The front living room furniture in particular is a bit too loud for my taste.

If it were my house, I would consider re-doing the railings if it was in budget. If not, I would probably paint the blue horizontal rails to black. I don't mind the vertical wood posts but the blue is a little too much for me personally and I think the railings would look better if they were more streamlined. Either thinner, square horizontal black rails or maybe cables or even glass.

I don't mind the carpet in the sunken family room though it could be nice to have consistent wood throughout. I don't mind the tile in the kitchen or the entry and sometimes it can be nice to have a break in materials. And stone and wood really go well with a mountain modern look. I might prefer a different stone tile, but that's just a personal preference. If you redo the floors, I'd go real wood rather than laminate. Otherwise it will look fake against all of the other real wood.

The kitchen layout does not seem very optimal with the cooktop on the end of the island, but I'd want to live in it to figure out what works and what doesn't. Something about the dark reddish stain isn't quite working for me, but again that might be a personal preference. It would be quite expensive to redo the whole kitchen so you'll have to decide if it's worth it. But whatever you do would need to fit with the style of the house.
