It so happens, Kim, the Zalud House in Porterville WAS on my list to visit this past year -- oh well. But, it's definitely still on the list, so this year. -- I see they are opening up again tomorrow. The strange history of the house itself is interesting (how about those paranormal tours), but I was also interested in seeing if "Shingled Raspberry" is still there, and what else, rose-wise. Congratulations on getting Oneto Home Saffron and Lady Roberts! Is that OHS in the pot in your photo? If so, it's already large for the variety, unless Anita's been growing it for years. I got Oneto Home Saffron from Vintage as a band in 2012, so I've been growing it for 9 years now. I totally agree with what Malcolm Manners says on HMF: "This is the slowest-growing rose I've ever grown." Mine is now 3' wide and 2' tall (in the ground, just measured it) and that's after a "spurt" of growth the past year or two. Its natural smallness seems so odd for a tea -- even the relatively diminutive and demure Madame Bravy was 4 1/2 - 5' tall or so. But, it's otherwise healthy and repeats well. Maybe I should try grafting it onto Fortuniana, see what happens...LOL. Actually, it's kind of nice to have a tea that's not going for world domination, for once. Lady Roberts was on my maybe-kill-for list for years and finally I got it year-before-last -- every bloom a heart-breaker, and my favorite color.

After growing roses indoors I will provide my experience. First I live in Portland, Oregon zone 5 but also lived in Vancouver which may be the same zone or one over or under. Anyway, because of our humidity and seasonal temps, roses grow well here in e, w, s, or north areas but two of those divisions work better. For example, southeast or Western southern, etc. Obviously you wouldn't be able to manipulate their growth patterns but they'll live. Outside on my balcony at least. I grew miniatures and regular sized roses. The regular in the long run are just too big of monsters to love adequately in a house overall. However, miniatures in zone 5 do well provided you have a humidifier or spray on the soil everyday, and water them every night. I open my window everyday to prevent mildew. The light from my studio is eastern so it's not great but I think my florescents contribute to an extra 4-6 hours of indoor light as well. Being a barista, my lights are on at random times but mostly very early or very late. Either way, my roses bloom, but not as fast as they do outside. They are in 2 gallon containers, they don't need 5 but I prune and snip them very often so they don't bush. I get powdery mildew but I spend time with all the leaves and clean them it's not bad. Aphids see another story. They don't leave. My solution? I bought a plant they RATHER eat and they leave my other plants alone for me to manage. Sometimes I'll have to deadhead blooms early if I noticed lots of aphids developing on a particular part(usually the flower :( ) but it get to live on and will produce more blooms. That's it really! People saying it's difficult probably don't live in the right zone. It's very risky in the right zone and is an everyday chore if you don't love tending and mending plants as an everyday hobby so just keep that in mind and you can grow anything :) btw I grow them close to my carnivorous plants;)

Hey everyone, I will not be able to come to the swap this weekend. I just got back from the vet and my doggie is not doing so well...apparently her spine is degenerating....anyway I can't leave her alone all day. For anyone that I was trading with I'm very sorry but hopefully I will make it to the next swap. If anyone is in the Miami area or passing through and would like to pick up their plants I am available and we can make a bar-b-que out of it.

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I think the recycle people would be disappointed. Now I'm just going to ask her if I can collect her used paper. The dog food bag was a bust. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. So she & I scooped peanut shells into my sandwich baggie as Gary made faces & shuddered. * Posted by: antic_zone9 z9FL (My Page) on Mon, Mar 15, 04 at 20:13 You know you're a compost wacko (or a wannabe) when: ...you take morning walks on trashday, pretending to be exercising, when you're really scouting the free bags of leaves. ...you walk the same route again, this time with the dog, in order not to arouse suspicion because you want to snag a beautiful closet door that will make a perfect wormbin (because of it's louvers). :) ...you don't worry about working out in a gym because you get your upper body workout by forking and turning your garbagecan compost bin. :) ...your DW is actually proud of you because of your commitment to something worthwhile (although you know she wonders about your sanity sometimes!) ;) ...you're ticked off that you can't compost plastic, because it won't break down within your lifetime, but you are happy that you are composting 60% of your garbage! ...you read composting books in the restroom and wonder if the DW would EVER let you have a composting toilet in the next house. (even if it was YOU that maintained it!) ...you subconsciously thank all of those hard-working neighbors who painstakingly rake up all of their leaves so you can steal their bags the next morning! ;) ...(this has been said before, but what the heck!)
