I haven't heard of bagged roses sold online either. Why would that be advantageous anyway? To pay shipping for low quality plants - and bagged roses by definition are the bottom as quality is concerned - that are available at every chain store and only at chain stores? You can buy very good quality bare root plants online that - opposed to bagged roses - have excellent root system and will grow very well. In addition shipping bare roots is probably far less expensive than ship baggies because bare roots are not covered in wood shavings or whatever the bags contain to keep the chopped roots relatively moist. The cheapest Âbagged roses can be bought at Walmart or LoweÂs and probably at Home Depot, and you save on shipping that is very expensive nowadays. Mike, ChambleeÂs indeed has very good prices in the own root category but their shipping cost is very high since lately they send plants in very heavy soil (probably native dirt).

If the vendor says "own root", that is not grafted ("budded" is the correct term). The bare root vendors typically will say "grafted" or "own root". Most bare root vendors sell grafted on Dr. Huey, except the Canadians, who sell mostly grafted on R. multiflora, with a smattering of Manetti. It is obvious when buying potted at the nursery: the grafted roses will have a large knot at the graft point, and the place where the Dr. Huey was cut off is usually visible. Most roses sold at local nurseries (including the big boxes) are grafted on Dr. Huey, save the Knock Outs (typically own root), and here the rugosas are sold own root. There are some David Austin English roses in most of the local public rose gardens. Bakers Nursery, 40th Str north of Osborn in Phx, had the largest selection this winter but that still only amounted to about 20 of them. The website and catalogue features many, many more.... all bred for form and fragrance. Depending on your sniffer, some will have more scent than others. When Austins became more widely available in the US, Phoenix rosarians poo-poohed the idea that cool-weather roses wouldn't like our heat and they were proved right on many of them. In particular, Prospero, Golden Celebration and Molineax do very well in my garden. Several others shut down in summer. Fair Bianca has the grayish brown blooms of other whites. Due to our warm weather, several Austins grown as shrubs in other climates can be grown as short climbers in ours. I cage my floppers in large tomato cages until the canes are strong enough to support the blooms. The cages are strong enough to hold them up but cheap enough to take wire snips to when no longer needed. Try www.davidaustinroses.com for the online catalogue. Check with Bakers to see what they still have available. They'll be several dollars cheaper than ordering online plus you don't want to be ordering roses in 100F temps.

Sue: Rather than looking for one place, I took a different tack and looked for specific roses wherever I went. Example: Most Rugosas will do well in Z5, as will most any own-root roses. How can you tell if you don't know? Look for a graft at the base of the plant -- own roots won't have a graft "ball" and will probably do well. Secondly, know that there Are things you can do to help not-so-hardy roses stay hardy in your area. Look for microclimates in your yard that could handle an iffy plant or two. Climbers, particularly. Plant deep -- no sign of the graft should appear above ground. And finally, "local" has become such a misnomer of late. There are very few retail nurseries that actually grow or graft their own roses, or anything else for that matter. Chances are that they got their roses from the very places one can order through on-line. Don't sacrifice quality for keeping the dollars in town. There's plenty of ways to do that, and roses aren't one of them. That said, there's nothing wrong with hitting the $5 table at Ocean State Job Lot for some Hybrid Teas that you know won't make it :-) If you feel like traveling at all, in East Windsor, CT on Route 140 just off Route 91, Revay's still does a lot of their own roses and sells only things that will be hardy to Zone 5.
