Guess I'm going to start a new project....
Comments (17)Hi all! I haven't been over to this side in a while and didn't realize this post had become active again. YES, the project is underway. We are wrapping up the presowing activities and will get the seeds into the containers next week. Thanks so much for your encouragement and ideas for subject integration. So far we have taken all of the containers and measured cicumference of the 2-liters. One of my standards is for students to realize the relationship between circumference and diameter (pi). They figured it out for themselves by measuring a variety of containers and seeing how many times the diameter fit into the circumference. We compared class data and they all realized that no matter the size of the container, the relationship was the same. Now, don't you think the kids are going to remember this much better than pen and pencil? Hands-on and driven by natural student interest at the same time - take that NCLB! Although I only teach the math, the science teacher is teaching about endangered plants and animals and they are planting the endangered coneflower. The language teacher will also be integrating the unit. For math, the students will measure and record data on a line graph (another standard). The kids are very excited about it. We are going to plant some annuals for quicker bloom, too. I've already started taking pictures and will have some to share soon. Again, Thanks for the support! Nikki...See MoreHey, Guess what? I bought three new late blooming daylilies.
Comments (25)"But in recent years, the weather in August has been so daggone horrible that I have had almost NO desire to even go out and spend much time in the garden at this time of year. Pretty sad, huh?" Are you kidding? When my daylilies were ending this summer, my reaction was "What a relief! I don't have to go out and look at those d...n plants any longer! It's over for another year!" LOL Actually, we've had a wonderful August. July had a couple of truly beastly weeks, but no Augustan Dog Days this year. Speaking of which, I picked up Moldovan's AUGUSTAN AGE for about $7 at our club's sale to the public. Very happy camper here, as that one is hard to find....See MoreWell, I guess I'll just go...
Comments (30)Duane, the reason for dressing casually and the current charitable recipient are also on the sign, but in small print. I doubt that many people read it because many people complain loudly that my receptionist is wearing jeans. I'm not sure how her attire affects how she answers their questions at the window. Since many of them are on their way to jail or prison, you wouldn't think they were fashion experts, but I guess I'm wrong about that. Carol, I was an English major in college and my professor was quick to point out that we don't really speak English, we speak an Americanized version, something that evolved from English. As we grow and become more diverse, so does our language. Truthfully, it intrigues me to think of where many of our slang words and phrases came from. Many have Latin roots, others Arabic and some seem to be uniquely ours. Annie...See MoreBummer. Well, I guess it was inevitable.
Comments (14)I was taking 2 calcium tablets in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m.. It occurred to me that maybe I should be taking them 3 times a day, at each meal, in smaller doses. What I've been reading about calcium absorption is confusing and contradictory. Some of the foods that are high in calcium, such as kale and collards, are also high in oxalic acid, which interferes with the absorption of calcium. I eat a ton of spinach, which I love, and it's high in oxalic acid. I wonder if that might have contributed to my bone loss. I do exercise a lot. I walk/jog 2 or 3 days a week, and weight train, usually mixed with cardio 3 days a week, for around 45 minutes to an hour. I take 1 to 2 days off, but frequently do yard work on my days off of formal exercise. I've been doing that for a few years now. However, from what I've been reading, I should have been doing that for much longer. This bone loss thing has probably been going on for quite some time. I'm certainly going to get onto my daughter and my daughter in law to start now on preventing this bone loss. In the meantime, I've gotten a stack of books from the library to read. I was wondering if that vitamin store, GNC, might have a good calcium supplement. Has anyone shopped there? I never have - the place always looks so intimidating through the window, all those bottles of stuff. lol. Sally...See Moretarheelgirl_7b
