uh oh, is my rose dying?

I got a rose from antiqueroseemporium about a month ago. Since I'm in Vegas & it's already getting hot I put it in a large (16 or 18 gallon) planter (with some holes drilled in the bottom) until the the fall. I used orchid potting soil, peat moss, sand, & pumice. 2 branches are brown - is it dying?

Not necessarily, but you should cut off that cane at least 2 inches below the black part. Can you post a further away picture of where it is? Does it get any sunlight? Does it have very good drainage? Drilled holes are fine, but it should also be up on bricks, or something, to keep it above whatever the pot is sitting on, so the water will be able to get out more easily.

Tips of branches doing that are not serious if the rest of the plant looks good.

Can't do anything about it now in any case. I don't know what forum you were reading. My recommendation for any one who might ask me is to prune when the forsythia is in bloom. Sometimes that is in March, sometimes that is in early April. No forsythia is in bloom here yet. Even though it was in the 60's here last weekend, no pruning here. We schedule the pruning of our community beds the first weekend in April, just to try to set a date. Each variety, each plant has its own needs. "Austins" is too generic. Some like a hard pruning, some don't. You'll find out over time what is best. If you didn't prune enough, you can go back and trim more off later. Don't obsess about it. Oh, and some just aren't good bloomers until they have matured, 3 - 4 years. Some just aren't good bloomers at all. Paul Z. has some videos posted, one is on pruning. Thanks everyone. All great feedback. I used it as an opportunity to practice my meager pruning skills, and basically hacked most of the branches down ton 12-ish inches. It looks a little like a modern tea rose after pruning, but this should give it plenty of rest while it rebuids, and in a shape I like. Boy do I know about resilient. For a couple of years I had a Madame Plantier still planted in the 2-3 gallon black pot that it was in when I won at the el cerrito celebration several years ago. It sat on a hot concrete patio, mostly not watered, completely neglected for a couple years. Assuming it was really really dead (sung like the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, for entertainment value), I reached down to pick it up and toss it, and something in me decided to try to see if it was actually still alive. So I watered it a few times. And wouldn't ya know it, from under the soil, it sent up a couple new basal canes. The old canes and the old stump were dead, but something new came up from the roots. After all that time. I repotted it into a 5 gallon pot last spring, and this year it is covered with little buds just waiting to open. I'm hoping the same happens with my Rose du Roi. Thanks! -kmama

Black is dead and will never be any other color. Remove them to where the pith is the color of the inside of an apple. George Vancouver and Morden Blush are both hardy Canadian roses that are bred to survive your winters. The Dream Rose series were advertised to be hardy and disease resistant but most failed to live up to the hype. You can wait on Golden Cascade for a while to see if there is new growth. In your area, I'd only buy proven hardy varieties. WalMart sells roses, any roses, regardless if they are suited for your growing zone or not. If there are no reputable nurserys in your area order on-line from Pickering oor Palentine roses. They list if a rose is hardy or not and sell good roses. In your area, unless it's a Canadian Explorer rose of some type, expect a lot of winter cane dieback that will have to be removed each spring on any rose you grow..

I normally keep it not under our porch roof, and it would get plenty of sun. Right now it's at the edge/under the porch roof where it doesn't get any sun after 12/noon. I need to talk to hubby about it - I think he keeps moving it back under there! I will put it up on blocks as well. I tried to make the soil well draining but I did wonder if the holes were enough.

I plant my potted roses in Miracle-Gro Moisture control potting mix/soil? It is at all of the H.D. and Lowes. A moisture-retentive growing medium is important. I have tried all kinds of mixes and concoctions and had my best luck with it.

Do not let the plant dry out, and make sure it receives morning sun only. Potted roses and full sun is a recipe for disaster... I use to keep bands on a wagon ( the one with open wiry sides and bottoms. The water would drain through the holes of the cart and I could easily move the roses onto and off of the covered patio.

I agree with Sheilah and Jackie regarding the rose bush health and getting it up on bricks...
