How to prune Romance series cherries, and other bush-like trees
Comments (10)I believe there are a few notes in the below link about pruning. From what ive read you just want to do as little pruning as possible, yet creating good airflow. What I understand is that many people talk of similarities between pruning bushes like mock orange. IT seems somewhat similar to roses (dead, diseased, crossing, and large older canes cut to the base or ground) ""Rules for pruning and training 1. Do pruning in April before trees break dormancy to encourage growth. 2. Pruning for size reduction should be done shortly after full leaf stage begins. It may be possible to decrease the size of the EvanâÂÂs Cherry with this method. 3. Never do pruning in summer or fall, it would encourage late growth and increase chances of winter damage. 4. Remove branches that rub against each other and diseased or damaged wood. 5. DonâÂÂt remove more than 25% of the wood in any one year. To remove more wood may encourage vegetative buds and reduce fruit yield the following year. Keep the branches thinned so that at harvest time you will have enough room to reach your fruit. 6. Allow your tree to have weeping branches. The branches weep because they were weighed down with fruit and are more likely to produce fruit in the future. 7. SK Carmen Jewel should be trained as a tall bush, similar to the way Saskatoons are grown. Although more research is needed on this, probably an open centered, vase like bush would be ideal. 8. EvanâÂÂs Cherry should be trained with a single trunk. Training to an open centre would make fruit more accessible at harvest. 9. Prunus eminens (or Mongolian cherry per catalogues) can be grown and clipped just like a hedge but this method will not produce much fruit. Thinning is needed to ensure enough light for fruit development. If you can still see some light coming through your bushes when in full leaf, then you have pruned enough. Comments (102)Susanne I love the funky oroblanco bloom, it's adorable! And almost alienlike compared to other citrus blooms which I love Laura your trees are so beautiful and an inspiration! I saw how Mike has transitioned his trees into a room full of lamps. Soon enough you'll see all of our trees becoming as green as yours one day! I was at IKEA last week checking out lamps and bought the $15 Lersta yesterday. I was setting it up and belatedly realized this was the lamp you suggested us to use back when everyone talked about their overwintering plans! I'm so glad I found it, I love the way the lamp looks and how it's tall enough to fit a lot underneath. I had a different fluorescent lamp on my tree before I got the IKEA lamp and it really greened up my Meyer. Once it became October, my Meyers leaves weren't vivid green anymore and was dropping old leaves like no tomorrow. I should've brought it back in much earlier. I now have an LED grow light in the IKEA lamp and I'm pointing the fluorescent to the side of my tree :) it seems to be loving the light that disappeared outdoors 5 flowers bloomed indoors within a few days of each other! I caught one bloom half open today when it was fully closed last night. Great idea putting the light clamps on the lamp, I'll definitely be getting one to do the same...See MoreWould you separate and re-pot an orchid if it looked like this?
Comments (22)I should have extra Chalice Vine cuttings by spring, with any luck, so you are welcome to some if you'd like? I had to scale back on the biggest one which grew too lanky for my window garden! The goats are doing fantastic! We introduced Mr. Pinner into the herd as the breeder this time around, and he's proven to be a wonderful dad, and has thrown gorgeous, healthy, stocky kids! His blood brought renewed vigor and size, and his children are all temperamentally sound and just what I was looking for! It's not unlike breeding dogs... basic genetics apply regardless the animal. His daughters are beautiful, and his sons look just like him. Next, I have to barter or trade for a complete outcross in a male, so we'll begin looking next spring. When adapting some medium for better water retention, I found a use for those silly coconut coir fiber disks sold along with Amaryllis bulbs. I'm glad I kept them off to the side! I took one and re-hydrated it, then wrung out the extra water. I used a bit of it in my mix for a plant or two in smaller pots that needed a little more moisture than most of my other plants. So far, it seems to be working pretty good. I can't afford to run a humidifier. I already run extra space heaters in this drafty old farm house, and with electricity prices, well... but I do keep pans of water here and there that evaporate and help somewhat, I suppose. when you get a chance, you must check out our farm antics! We have so much fun with the chickens, turkeys, goats and other things going on! https://www.youtube.com/@RODEHAWGKENNEL There are tons of short and long videos, photos, and some are mine made in my greenhouse as I mix Gritty Mix and re-pot plants and whatnot. Check out our schedule and subscribe, and you'll get notifications of when we go live so you can join the conversation and see us in action! I would love it if you were a member, and it's free. :-) Take care!...See MoreSo my orchid is starting a spike ... now what?
Comments (10)The last spike spiraled down, so this orchid doesn't seem to know what up it, haha. In fact it has a root that arches up and over like one might expect of a spike. (That's the one going off to the right and behind the leaf.) The tan/light colored former growth running parallel underneath and then going down is the previous spike; if I recall, it curled down through the media and then back up and over itself - not really over the leaves, but the plant was pretty heavily kanted at the time (see picture with white flowers). It was made vertical last repotting. I was thinking the green tips were buds (or the makings of them) ... it has multiple green points now....See Moresara_ann-z6bok
