are these mites on underside of oncidium?
Comments (7)Yes, I agree they're aphids. Aphids love tender new growth and flower buds. You can actually wash them off with soapy water, but something like Safer's Insecticidal will kill them. You do need to repeat treatment at five day intervals maybe three or four times to get them all. Aphids give birth to pregnant young, so one left = thousands in a few days. Be sure to spray the whole plant, including the developing spike....See MoreHelp with the exterior of my house
Comments (25)I like the tall porch, it is a recognizable and unusual feature of the house. I would change the front doors to get rid of the oval glazing... I would put french doors in or doors with a solid bottom half and divided light glazing on the top half. I would also take the shutters off the round top window and beef up the molding around that window. Then, I would paint the shutters either black or green, and paint the house a very creamy color. I would replace those small hanging lanterns with giant ones and scale back the coach lights attached to the house on either side of the doors. I would put a very thick, substantial lattice in place between the supports for the deck (which is wonderful, by the way!). Those bushes around the brick steps are overgrown and should be either massive cut back or transplanted somewhere else and new, low growing shrubs planted in their place. If this were my house, I would consult an architect for guidance on making stylistic changes to the exterior. You have a wonderful property and I can't wait to see what you end up doing with it!...See MoreI need MAJOR help with curb appeal!
Comments (20)The first thing I would do is to start composting. Next, you need a design. The landscaping forum is a great place to start. Better Homes and Gardens' website also has a lot of free garden designs. Think about how much time you have to spend, how much water you want to use (water costs money!), whether things are kid-friendly, and so on... A great way to save money is by starting your own plants from scratch. Check out the Winter Sowing forum for an easy, cheap way to do this. I have been winter sowing for 5 years now and our yard looks a whole lot better. The Seed Trading Forum often has send-a-prepaid-envelope for free seeds offers (look for SASBE offers). I got a lot of seeds that way. I also traded extras of the few plants I had on the Plant Trading Forum. There are also probably plant swaps in your area--look for the forum on gardening in your state. Gardeners are a friendly bunch and you'll often read, "Newbies welcome." Discount stores often have plants--but this is where you REALLY have to do your research. One of the discount stores near us was running a special on roses. I wrote down all of the names of the roses and did a search on my computer. Only ONE of those rose varieties was suitable for our area. I went back, got that variety, and planted it using the tips I got from the Rose Forum. It's now happy as a clam and taking over our front bed....See MoreI need a morale boost and advice. Comments (49)A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO GAVE ME SUGGESTIONS AND ENCOURAGEMENT!!! The party was GREAT!! I hope everyone had has much fun as DH, and if they didn't, well .... it was for him. I did a toned down Caribbean theme with candles, hurricanes, and votives I already had, a $10 bouquet of fresh flowers from the grocery store, a few silk flowers from Michaels, and plates and napkins from Party City. I had to use the FR, kitchen, and DR for dinner seating: DH (far left) and friends did a mini concert in our unfinished basement. Everyone was impressed with DH's brazen self confidence and my (blush) DIY talents. http://i613.photobucket.com/download-albums/tt216/artlover13060/GreenbackDollar.mp4 Metal tubs repurposed from the laundry room to hold beer and wine: A coffee mug has a new life as a holder for plastic ware: Floating candles, fresh flowers, seashells make an inexpensive center piece on the card tables. Silk flowers and ribbon tie up the silverware. (I hate eating meat with plastic ware so I used the real deal for the meal.)
