what should i be feeding my potted hostas?
Comments (1)If your peat moss has fertilizer in it already, hold off. I only use an occasional 1/2 liquid fert on mine. You don't want to get fertilizer burn on the leaves. Right now (after flowering) they are growing roots so high nitrogen ferts won't do much. I recall years ago wondering why nothing much was growing in my pots in July, then I noticed the roots coming out the bottom of the pots a few weeks later. Hostas go thru stages, and after they flower they grow more roots for next year, while the bugs chew on what you have above the soil. -Babka...See MoreCould I use fabric grow bags & coir-based potting soil to move hostas?
Comments (5)What Esther is talking about are NOT Spinout bags, they'd be something like the Hydro Crunch Planters you can buy at Home Depot, not the same thing. I have no experience with these, but I am using Spinout bags, in the ground, under some Arborvitae, and they do their intended job very well. For what Esther's looking to do I suspect the Hydro Crunch ones would do nicely. Pieter...See MoreShould I transplant hostas in ceramic pots to fabric now, or wait?
Comments (6)I made some calls Friday to find the best rate for shipping my hostas and heuchies to Baltimore. Busfreighters wanted $625. Fedex wanted $412. I know the replacement cost for my hostababies would be over $700, so just figured Fedex would just be part of the cost of moving. Then, quite unexpectedly, I got a call Friday afternoon from my friends Mimi & Joe. They have been absolutely wonderful to me over the years, helping me with some household repairs I couldn't do myself. Are you sitting down, Hostapeople? Mimi said that they'd be happy to load up all my potted hostas in their large SUV and drive them to my place in Baltimore after I am moved in! And if it took 2 trips to get them all down there, they'd do it. Can you believe such kindness? I was literally reeling after I got off the phone! I had to share this with you. BTW, I intend to place the fabric potted hostas on the wire shelving units I purchased for them, on the balcony. Do I need to protect them from the winter, as they will not be sunk into the ground, and if so, what should I do? Thanks....See MoreWhat size fabric grow pot should I repot my new 4.5" pot hostas into?
Comments (2)I know nothing about fabric grow pots. I would guess there are few people who use them as pots, as opposed to in-ground applications. Generally speaking, one would go up a couple of inches in pot size if the 4.5" pots are full of roots. Hosta in pots prefer to be somewhat pot bound. I understand that putting a small hosta in a large pot is a no-no. bkay...See MoreEsther-B, Zone 7a
