7 years agoJody's deckhand made this pic from the back deck of the shrimp boat. I asked why it is so dark...he said early morning, but that is the sun coming up, so I don't know.

Comments (20)Nicole, thanks. There was just a story on our local station, I think it was, that there are only about 5,000 painted dogs still in the wild. Our zoo has a very successful breeding program for these guys and are helping to keep them from disappearing altogether. Dawn, that is an awesome painting of your picture! Comments (24)Jasdip - we've been trying to buy yeast for months. DH makes bread or pizza dough at least 3 times a week and I was down to one of those little single use packets. I happened to mention to a friend that I couldn't find it - except at Amazon and I refused to pay an exorbitant amount for yeast. But I kept checking around and finally my local bakery told me to come back the next week and they'd sell some to me. Well, I went back only to discover that they had decided to close for the duration. Then this little package came in the mail one day from a gourmet food store in Hialeah Florida. Inside was the one pound package of yeast but no information as to who sent it. I had decided that DH ordered it but didn't want me to know how much he had paid - or worse - had forgotten that he'd ordered it. I relayed this little mystery to my friend who told me that she had ordered it from Amazon and Amazon had neglected to include her name. She wouldn't let me reimburse her and I only hope that she didn't pay too much. But it's been a god send! Comments (30)Yes, they really looked creepy, especially the ones without hair. It was in a hobby/model store in the Akihabara district of Tokyo, but I can't remember which. I was wandering around the neighbourhood and in and out of some big stores that I thought looked interesting. The bottom floors were mostly anime and character figures, but these were upstairs....See More

I am in Louisiana right now at the family house. It was overcast this morning but it turned very sunny.

Nicole, that is not a giant ice plant, although it is an ice plant. I simply put some cuttings from the front yard into a hanging basket that has other succulents.
The orange flowers are epidendrum orchids, which bloom all year here, and I now have them in several colors, but mostly yellow to red. I want to get a purple one.
Murraysmom, weather here is springlike all year, and so it is difficult for me to remember what month it is at times, but we do get changes of day-length. Still, it is mild enough in the winter for me to grow tropical fruit, such as cherimoya, mango (which I don't have since I left Venice), bananas, and white sapote, which are just now about to get ripe. I also love that I have year-round citrus. A lot of herbs are perennials here, but certain herbs (like parsley, cilantro, and dill) do best in the winter. However, I have learned to move them to shadier spots in order to grow them in the spring and summer.
In a couple of months, my epiphyllum will start blooming, and that is my favorite time of the year, as the flowers provide a riot of color.
I have orchids and bromeliads blooming in my back yard throughout the winter, and I really do appreciate the colors that they add. My favorite plants are probably the bromeliads, but when the epiphyllum are in bloom, there is no comparison.
Here you can see my one of my epiphyllum in bloom from May 2015, but it is not in full bloom. I am expecting a lot more flowers this year, as I keep adding to my epiphyllum collection. I've almost run out of room for more bromeliads, but I could rearrange things, perhaps with a local plant swap. I have some bromeliads that I would like to get rid of (because they are too prolific), and I would like to replace them with different bromeliads.
