My violet won't stop blooming

Hi! It's weird, right? But my violet won't stop blooming and I need to change its soil and put it on wick watering, it's been three months already. It keeps throwing flowers and more flowers and before the flowers fade, there are more buds and flowers stems growing. I already stop the fertilizer, what can I do? I'm concerned with its health too, I heard some violets die after so much flowering. Can I change the soil with the flowers?

Don't worry, she looks great !!!!! Just enjoy the view and relax....She will quit when she is ready. Violets are potted on THEIR schedule not ours. If she is happy and blooming just be as happy as she is! Gosh do you know how many of us would trade violets with you right now????

To my knowledge no violet ever died because of "bloomeditself-itis"!!!!! Enjoy it! Rosie

I've heard they use so much energy that they can die after, or lose leaves. I was afraid she was thinking "reproduce or die trying, fighting!".

She's the only one doing that, the others are very calm, throw a flower or two, wait some weeks, throw another...I guess this is a hyperactive kid, I'll just wait it gets tired, or I hahahaha (since I tried wicking method I don't want anything else).

I've had a motteled leaf Paph for only a year, and while it hasn't bloomed it's put out quite a lot of leaves. You've had the plant for 3 years and I think you mentioned only a few new leaves, right? It might be young... but it might not be getting the right set of light/water/neutrients. I bet it's not a species plant and all hybrids are a little different. I know mine started with 6 leaves and it's already up to 13 leaves, with a third of them hitting 6 to 7 inches in length. I don't use a grow light. I have them in a south facing window with UV film on the windows to block 70+% of the UV so it's direct/in-direct light. Seems to love it. My phals don't love it as much but I kinda like a phal with a tinge of red to the leaves. Lol. I'm a cruel phal parent. I'm thinking you should move it, find it a spot it likes. I also put mine into a self watering pot after the first 6 months. It's the only plant I have in one. And I tend to keep the water in it's basin rather low so that the basin dries out (but not the orchid medium) between waterings. I only add more water when the medium feels on the drier side, but never bone dry. Good luck. I'm sure it'll bloom for you some day. Oh, and don't forget to drop the temp. I hear they need to get cold (mid to high 50's) to induce blooming.

From my experience with a Phal that was in constant bloom for over 2 years, I'd cut the stems off. It was a very strong growing French hybrid. to begin with it was a very pleasing plant with large red spotted white blossoms. After over 2 years it looked very scraggly with the blossoms on long zig-zag stems. But, worst of all, it seemed to collapse from exhaustion. The plant itself [leaves] looked terrible. It threw off a keiki and then died. The keiki did fine. I never let it bloom for that long of a time period. I had several other Phals that did not have any problems while being grown right along side that one. Cutting the stems off will not harm the plant. It will bloom again the following year. It's a bit of stretch to say that repeat blooming roses don't go dormant. While modern roses, specifically hybrid teas, do have some evergreen parentage, multiple thousands of generations later and with continual diverse genetic input, that heritage is slight (btw, it is generally considered that the remontant characteristics of modern roses is due primarily to R. chinensis, which is neither tropical in origin or fully evergreen) and truly evergreen species roses tend to be a bit delicate and tender, preferring hotter climes than our own. Plants from more temperate regions, which would include most modern roses and certainly hybrid teas, do go through a period of dormancy when metabolism changes and new growth slows dramatically or even halts. This is true for evergeen plants as well. Even rose growers in extremely mild climates, like southern California, recognize the advantage of this rest period of dormancy or semi-dormancy and encourage their roses to enter this state through the same practices described above. Disbudding, deadheading, allowing hip formation and removing foliage all contribute, together with colder temperatures and reduced day length, to stimulate the plants to enter this state. A period of total or full dormancy like herbaceous perennials and most fully deciduous trees and shrubs experience is not really necessary and, often in our climate, difficult to achieve, but neither do you want the plant to expend unnecessary energy trying to produce new growth and flowers this late in the season. And if for no other reason, the removal of foliage both from the plant itself and from the ground and surrounding area will go a long way in reducing the overwintering of disease problems.

Since you mention several months time frame, it's possible that they were actually affected by the big cold front that came in early March in your area. 4 of them already look like the color of fading blooms. However, you can keep them on as long as the bloom stalk is still healthy looking and it could be that in your local area, they will still be coming up (though I have seen many people's daffodils already in bloom, but I can't say if yours are late since there are daffodils with different bloom times)

No, she is thinking "Let me impress this lady that is taking such great care of me!" She is setting the bar for the other ones. She will get tired (but NOT die lol) and then the others will catch up eventually!

When she gets tired ... she will rest.

I've yet to have a violet which bloomed itself to death ...

You can also go ahead and repot it her even though she's blooming. Don't worry about it. As long as the crown looks good and isn't getting too shaded and keeps growing, I agree with the others.

It's more a streptocarpus thing to bloom themselves to death if they have a unifoliate species in the breeding. Bristol's Spectacular is one you have to keep an eye on for example. It'll bloom so heavily (if you let it) that it'll stop making leaves entirely.

I haven't ever lost a violet from blooming itself to death and I have had some that just never stop blooming. Ann is one of those for me. She /always/ has flowers and never seems interested in taking a break year round. If you are really worried though, you can remove the flowers when you repot and get in there and remove the flower buds as well, as they form, for a little bit after repotting until you see strong new leaf growth in the crown. Then let her do what she likes best and enjoy!
