Labeled Rebutia, what is it really? Can you tell without blooms?

I don't have a rebutia yet but I looked up this one in Llifle and it doesn't match. The spines look different and those fuzzies on top are flower buds. R. krainziana is supposed to bloom from the side of the plant. That yellow thing is plastic, and firmly attached to the growing point, so I left the plant at the store. Altman's now charges an extra dollar for the glued on flower or dish scrubber or whatever that's supposed to be. Lowes does sell cacti without the hats, but not necessarily the same varieties. Sometimes the only way to get the one you want is to deal with glue. This was the only one of its kind at the store. I'm tempted to go back and buy it. It reminds me of the Echinopsis "Rainbow Bursts" I have begun to collect. I am a sucker for anything with flower buds.

From what I can tell it looks to be a Parodia. Can you post a pic from the top so then I can help with species;). Definitely not a Rebutia, but you may stumble upon Rebutia krainziana at Lowes and it’s a beautiful Rebutia, probably one of my favs.

Edie I think that would be Echinobivia "Rainbow Bursts" you referred to. As for your plant, I agree it doesn't look like a typical Rebutia which seem to have more of a spiral pattern to the areoles anf generally bloom from low on the sides or around the base, not near the crown.

I also have Splish Splash and for me it got about 2.5 ft tall bloom spikes on it this year, but the foliage stayed lower at about 1 ft and the leaves were the biggest of any geranium variety I own. It is done blooming now, so I cut down the taller blooming parts and it is back to a mound of leaves on long stems. It was really pretty in bloom, and even found it's way to mixing with a "Butterfly" Japanese Maple I have it planted under. The two colors on the geranium flower looked pretty against the soft pink/green/cream of the maple leaves. I also have 3 Rozannes and LOVE them. One is in full sun and is smothered with flowers most all of the summer, and the other two are in part shade and I bought them specifically to be filler plants. They are performing just as beautifully as I hoped. One is planted at the base of a Jackmanii clematis on a pillar, and it is reaching up to play with the dark purple blooms of the clematis, and it really compliments the Digitalis and Echinacea plants next to it as well. The third is planted at the base of a birch tree and currently mingling with a small section of herbs in a sunnier edge of one bed, and it is also filling space next to a Stained Glass Hosta, a clematis climbing up the birch, and some shade plants tucked into the center portion of the bed. I can't say enough good things about Rozanne ! I have a bunch of other perennial geraniums and I feel that this genus really is a workhorse in the garden and would not be without them. The groundcover varieties are perfect for the front edge of beds, gently spilling over onto pathways. I have also tried with the Bikovo types to pull off a chunk and re-plant. Yes, it does work very well, if you get some roots. The new plant will sulk the first year but be back to new next spring. As far as Rozanne is concerned, I don't think I would try to split her. It looks like most stems come from a single point/crown, unlike the spreading Bikovo types, so if you try to slice through the center, it would probably damage the plant too much. They are usually available locally, so if I want another one, I'd rather buy a nice sized established plant. They are well worth the $$ in my garden.

Can you recommend a Brother P-touch label maker

Get the Brother printer that sets on your desk and hooks to your computer. Then you can use the mouse to stretch or shrink the label size, the entire label appears on the monitor as it will be in the finished product. Then when you are ready to make a label you just hit print and like any printer it spits out the printed page, in this case a label. I use a refurbished (Â½ price, on the Brother refurbished website) P-Touch PRO DX 9200. It was quite a bit more but it precuts the tapes, makes duplicates easily and takes up to 1Â½ inch tapes. I bought it only for daylilies but have found many other uses for it. They don't make this model anymore but any of them that are only a printer without the keyboard or screen will be cheaper, easier to use, faster, and more accurate and less wasteful because you use the compter software, which by the way, can easily be updated free from the Brother website.

It depends on what you want it to do. I wanted one with 2 lines and could take tape up to 1 inch (or at least 3/4 inch). I also wanted to be able to use a few different fonts and frames - and I had a big rebate coupon burning in my hand so I went with the fancier model - case, transformer, and all - the case is big and not sure I would do the case again - but it does protect it. Now after buying one - I am still on my first two rolls of tape...

Kara, I went back to the store and it was still there. I still didn't buy it, but took more pictures. That thing is not coming off without taking part of the cactus, so I can't get a look at the center.

The one on the right with the orange pom pom is a Parodia werneri for comparison. It's labeled with the old name, Notocactus uebelmannianus.

Here are three of my "Rainbow Bursts." Geoforce, they are labeled Echinobivia "Rainbow Bursts," but Lobivia is now lumped into Echinopsis so both names are correct. Note that the three have different shapes and spine patterns. I bought all three this month so the blooms will be a surprise. I'll post photos when the buds open.

It's good to see that some influential consumers have got growers to put on the word 'strawflower' on the label. I'd be curious to see how that came into law.

Can I borrow your first image, Edie? I actually have an FB lawyer friend in New York (he's heavily indebted to me for sharing quality cat videos with him) I could ask. Come to think of it, my good friend in San Diego also works in the nursery industry in Vista, CA. I'll ask him too.

Yes, cactus, you can use the photo. I don't think it's a law, just Altman's labeling. Lowes has trays of cacti side by side, with and without fake flowers, and signage to make it clear the tray with the fakes is priced higher. Which makes sense, since someone has to pay for the fake flowers, the glue, and the extra labor to glue the things on. Altman also sells succulents in 2.5" pots with a bright-colored plastic cup used as a pot cover. Those are labeled "Color Cups" or something similar and cost a few cents more to pay for the double pot. Altman is generally wonderful about labeling their plants, and I was surprised to see a mislabel. The assorted succulents at Wal-Mart are still labeled only as "succulent."
