Which Counter Height Bar Stools?

I need to purchase bar stools for this kitchen. I'm having trouble imagining other styles compared to what is here (previous owners). I'd like to get away from the country feel and update the look but tend to be a Pottery Barn style person myself. Also, I have a young child so sturdy and a back is helpful but I don't love how high the back comes above the counter. The pendant lights will also be replaced. Ideas? Help me see the possibilities!!!

If you change the lighting, widow valance & stools it will go a long way in de-country-ing the space. As far as the stools I would go I would go with something the same color as the island so they kinda disappear.

I like the stool mark_rachel suggests a lot. Low-backed stools like that are the way to go, IMO. Are those valances or raised blinds/shades on the windows? Looks like the latter to me. I agree that replacing the stools and the pendants will significantly change the look of this room. Pretty kitchen!

I'd go counter height. It is much more efficient. Maybe I'm not picturing this right but the picture is all one level island. If the entire island is bar height, it sortof takes away any practical use for food prep, baking, basically anything you'd want to do at that area standing. Plus, to climb up onto a bar stool every time you want to sit down and eat would become tedious - just my opinion. Also, if you plan on putting 6 stools around it, you need to make sure you have at least 12-14" of overhang or it won't be comfortable to sit at. It sounds like you're planning on using this as a primary eating area, so you'll want to have room for your legs under the overhang. The island in your picture has no overhang except for the curved end which looks more decorative to me than functional. I like the style of this one and think using the white to go with FR cabinets is a nice idea.

For us 24" was too low. I bought 26" high. A little harder to find but worth it. I mocked it up using a stepstool and box. Take the time to determine the right height. There are also some stools that come in 25", 26.5, 27, 27.5, 29". Our height ranges in our house from 5'5" to just over 6'.

Below is the link for Penney's stools. I've been getting their catalogs for years and have a few saved for when we need to buy them. They seem to have a really good selection, different heights / styles / finishes. When my parents needed some we ended up finding a Bistro set at BJ's Wholesale that was more reasonably priced then Penney's. If you do see something you like at Penney's, be sure to google JC Penney coupon code, you should be able to find a decent coupon. Also sign up for their email deals. So I found these stools at Copenhagen and I really like them!! (and the price.) They are very comfy and lightweight. Issue- I'm doing brass accents. I do have SS appliances but faucet, pulls, lighting are all brass. I do like the idea of mixing metals. WDYT? (the legs are chrome.) Perimeter cabinets are white but island (where the stools will be) is gray. I'd love your thoughts. I'm a very insecure decorator!!

They are shades. I'm not sure how I feel about the more industrial metal style of the stools. Functionally, I totally agree!

Not sure if this link will work. I used the Four Hands Banana Leaf counter stool to "de-countrify"my kitchen. If the link doesn't work, just google it. The stools add a wonderful texture and the backs are not not high. They are also very sturdy.
