Raised bar counter and overhang - how big is too big

We are planning to have a raised bar on our kitchen peninsula. There will also be cabinets under the peninsula bar so the bar countertop will be very deep. The standard IKEA upper cabinets which will be used for the under-bar cabinets are 15" deep so if I have a 15" overhang (which I want - we currently have less than 12" and it's useless for sitting) the bar counter will be at least 30 " wide. This is all before I have figured out whether or not there will need to be a knee wall to attach this whole thing to, which would add another 4 inches. To me this just seems enormous. My husband keeps saying "the bigger the better". We do have the space so that is not a constraint. Questions: Will there need to be a knee wall in order to attach the two sets of cabinets and the countertop? Will this just look amazingly huge? I don't even know if I'll be able to reach to clean it. It's a condo so the space is not on a massive scale.
