Help Please: Table Setting With a Throw or “Square”

Got for dd from pottery barn. Sales person called it a square. Setting the table with it feels a little awkward, though there was a table in the store set with a different one, adding placemats or chargers.. I’m having difficulty finding inspiration pics. Her table is similar to this, but a dark walnut color. Here is the is the throw. Hoping to use for Easter. TIA!!!! Cross post on other side.

I was hosting Moroccan night and wanted to use a throw/rug that i actually got in BA but had the colors i wanted. As long as it is not too thick, just lay it diagonally and then ...ignore it. Set the table the way you would if it were not there. Maybe I can find a pic ...

Hmm, I also used craft paper under mine, but it isn't necessary and would not go with your topper ... you could use a solid coordinating tablecloth.

Try Googling "layering table linens" or words along those lines. I found a few inspiration pics doing that, although you're right - there's not much out there. I think the table squares are a pretty look, but I always find them a bit awkward to arrange just right. Luckily, once the dinnerware and food is on the table, nobody notices if the execution is not precise.

Placing plates and dishes full of food might be a challenge depending on number of people seated. We usually seat a crowd, would never want a guest having to balance a plate on the edge of a square. I would probably only use the square for show, not for an actual meal.

Probably have to get it built for you. Not much demand for 54" square tables as the project far into the room on the corners and folks can't pass food across the table without coming out of their chair. A seating position is typically 24" minimum, so that means legs far outboard or a center pedestal to seat 8.

Thanks, Les, for all your comments and advice. I know I need to calm down. And you're right. I'm not striving for perfection; I want it comfortable and welcoming--but I also don't want to make a mistake that is avoidable. We do have ottoman overload, but we were dealing with a small room with very little wall space, and we wanted to be able to have four people camped out (and horizontal) for family TV viewing. And thus all the ottomans, which all do get used. As for tables, the striped ottoman doubles as a coffee table for drinks, etc. There is a table between the two dragonfly chair, and one next to the leather chair. I'm looking for a small one for the fireplace-end of the couch. We can't have one closer to the blue chairs because I want a walking space there. Lighting is tricky because of where the outlets are located. There is a lamp for the leather chair (not pictured), but the rest of the lighting is in the ceiling. It works so far but maybe we should re-think that, too. I had seen the firenze pillow in person but can't remember why it didn't work. I'm toying with having pillows made from the striped fabric, or the dragonfly fabric because I really would like more blue near the fireplace. Thanks for your comments Hoosier and Busy. I'm thinking the numbers and colors and will decide soon. Thanks again everyone!

Thank you for the info I have looked,trying to find something about about design,maker, ect. It has an oak leaf pattern and acorn on top of buffet. The numbers 190 on back also I007/I. R-4I646. Those are the letter I not the number 1.. If anyone has more info I would love to know it

martinca, I think it's hard to miss pictures of my home since I feel it's plastered allover here..)) and should be less of it but if you did..you didn't loose much if you ask me (I've a bit a bumpy relationship with my house lately. not decor-related) you're very kind I remembered that I might have a picture of this layered thing on my Facebook where I don't go often..several years back, it was..I do remember I mostly tried to capture the cake my daughter made..if I remember which year it was would be easier to dig it up , because this Facebook is a black hole where posts die I saw you opened another thread..I read albeit very fast..I also use chargers when I don't want to use another table cloth underneath. I have this two by three embroidered..thin rug in the middle, always on my table, and if very casual meal, I just leave as is and give round chargers to everyone Martha, your arrangements are so chic and so inviting

I've been following this thread because I don't understand the purpose of the table throw. Mtn's solution of adding a runner helps pull it all together. I wish you had gotten more responses.

Either use it as a topper or place it and set your table as you would normally. I would use chargers and not placemats. Think of how throws and rugs are used in still life paintings of old.

Mtn, our silver patterns are very similar. Mine is Minuet by International.

Thanks, Rita. That pattern was actually my Mom's but I use it now. My pattern was Gorham Newport Scroll, which is very heavy. I much prefer hers now, Gorham Fairfax.

Thank you everyone! Yes, Maddielee, as soon as I thought about wine glasses on this bumpy embroidery I knew it was a big no. However, it looks gorgeous as a daily table dressing . I’ll try to remember to add a pic later. For Easter, the table was perfect with simple white placemats against the dark wood. Rita! What magic eye do have that allowed you to see * MTN’s silver pattern?!!!

* Love the Moroccan setting.

mtn, my silver is Gorham Newport Scroll, and I chose it because I thought it was light :)

Martinca - you can see it in the photo of her Moroccan table setting.

At first I thought it was the same pattern have - Reed and Barton American Federal. Which reminds me that I need to check the fork tines to see if they need to be polished.
