Master bedroom without dresser or chest?

Hi all we are moving into a new house. Our master bedroom is a little smaller then the one we have now, but the closet is huge. My husband would really like to decrease the clutter by not using our bedroom furniture, specifically the chest and dresser and just putting all of our clothes both folded and hanging in the closet. is this a thing? I fell a little hung up on not having that furniture in the room.

No dresser in the bedroom was exactly my plan in my new house and so far I have attained it. I had drawers built in the closets. It's awesome. I love having all my clothes together in the same space. No more separating them into groups of work/casual/etc. Sometimes I like to mix& match haha. Also my coats and workout and everything is in there. except swim suits :( Not enough drawers. yet haha I may add something. But right now I'm using 3-drawer chests as nightstands to store my bathing suits & some random items that don't fit in my closet drawers.

I do have room for some pieces if I wanted. In my previous house I didn't have a lot of space but had to keep a chest for towels, etc bc the master bath was so small.

Its not uncommon. Depending on the size and height of the furniture you could always move it into the closet, or use only one piece in the room for items like socks, underwear etc. and put everything else in the closet.

I’ve done that in my guest room, the room is large enough but walk-in closet large too. instead of a dresser in the room I added a large upholstered bench where the dresser was & I like the spacious uncluttered look of the room better.

Believe it or not, decent looking ceiling fans exist. On every design show I've ever seen they're the first things to be thrown out, but I have them in every bedroom. Mmm slight draft at night without the sound of floor fan... I pspent no fewer than 18 weeks looking (off and on) for a "pretty" one to go in my master. I have lived with a 4 poster bed. My experience - unless you have really high ceilings, and I'm talking like 10 ft, and a sizeable room, it will turn your space into... tiny. Once upon a time in a previous life I thought I had a big bedroom until I put a poster bed in there. I like your computer nook. I always wanted a space like that, which I could separate from the rest of the room with some romantic drapery tied back. I might force that idea on my formal dining room. :) beds/headboards coverin ga window do bother me. I don't like anything to cover a window (couch, table, or otherwise) -- but that's just me. And if it came down to a queen bed, or covering that window, sure - the window would get covered! We have single panels on our two bedroom windows, mostly because they're skinny and it looked silly to me to have two panels. If you need to cover the window, something that seems to help (at least when I've seen it done) is to pull the bed away from the wall a foot or so. Then you can go with two panels, and it looks kind of intentional instead of "didn't have space." Something else to keep in mind with blocking windows -- does the sun come directly in such that it would fade your bedding over time?

Thanks Loribee, I'd like a mirror, but I also love when people have mirrors behind the bedside tables. I'm wondering if that would look good. It's hard to think of what would go over the bed too. Because the bed is so ornate and big and the ceiling is high. I have such a hard time picking art. Beth P.

We have an almost identical layout, and the PO's built a window seat with storage. I didn't like it at first, but it does hold a lot of pillows and blankets, which is nice. I struggled with what to do with the window, and ended up with inside mount blinds and an outside mount curved rod with floor-length drapes. I should probably make a nice cusion for the seat, though.

We have done the same thing, not due to the size of the room but for a nicer decluttered space. We have closets which have added drawers, you can go to CA Closets (more expensive option) or The Container Store (more affordable option) and either can add drawers and organization to any walk in closet.

Like jwap I have added two large 3 drawer nightstands, mine are from RH, and they hold things like socks, pjs etc. and it works just perfectly. Best of luck to you in the new home pthibo5.

I've done that in my house. It's wonderful! All my clothes are in the large walk-in with build-ins so it's more like a dressing room. Everything in one place. So much more convenient! Plus the bedroom is less cluttered, more roomy.

We installed closet drawers from IKEA in our previous house and I loved them. Sometimes more than my current custom ones. We used their online closet design software to configure it all and we installed it ourselves over a weekend.

If your master closet is large enough you can get a closet company to design built in drawers. If you have the closet dimensions I can an idea on the CAD for you. The trend now is less furniture. The home I live in now is an older home (1972) have very little furntirue in the master. Instead we have lots of drawers in our closet.

The bedroom in our new house was too small for our old bedroom furniture (space between end of bed and dresser was simply not big enough to fully open dresser drawers)....so, we kept the bed and nightables (which have drawers), moved the dresser, without mirror, into another room where it provides storage , and put a bookcase where the dresser would have been. The walk in closet has drawers, and pretty much accommodates all our clothes.

I LOVED not having all that big furniture in my last bedroom and having all of my clothing in one spot (rather than a closet and a dresser in another room). We now are living in a space with a much smaller closet so we have a dresser - the next home we buy will have a large closet and no dressers!

Makes sense to me. Less stuff to clutter up and dust. Would love to be able to do this in ours! :) What are the dimensions of your new master bedroom? Are you worried it will look too bare without furniture or do you simply appreciate your furniture? Instead of storage, perhaps you'd have room for a chair or a bench? Or a nice leaning wall mirror?

I love bedrooms without a lot of case goods. I have the bed, several large oueces if art, two integrated nightstands, a chair and ottoman, and a bench in mine. still looking for the right console table for one wall.
Everything else is in the closet. I find it very restful . And less dusting.

I love having everything in my closet!

Uncluttered is the way to go. You won't regret it.

I too have everything in the closet. I’ve actually never had a dresser and I like it that way. Other interesting things you can do in the bedroom without having to have a dresser.

We are going to try to downsize to one dresser in our new house. In our old house we each had a dresser plus our shared closet. New house closet is about the same size - maybe smaller. However, we’ve been living for 11 months with 1/3 of our clothes- the rest in storage. It’s been eye opening - so many clothes & shoes we don’t miss!! Our plan is to donate the bulk of what’s in storage when we unpack and eliminate a dresser. Wish us luck!
