Help me choose some colors here (granite, backsplash, cabinets)
Comments (37)OK, here are the pics after the cabs were stained. We went with a deep mahogany to coordinate with the tiles, granite and backsplash. The results have really exceeded our expectations. My contractor says that the shine of the top coat will tone down over the next few weeks. Note: I have many skills, but photography is not one of them. So please excuse the crappy pics :) The stain is really a dark brown/mahogany -- not black as seen in some of the pics. Here is a picture with the flash on -- shows some of the brown tones...See MoreIs too much brown a bad or good thing? Need opinions
Comments (23)I KNOW I had updated pictures of our Cowboy Chic den but can't for the life of me find them. The 24x26 room isn't a brown brown, more of a orangy brown. Walls and sectional pretty much the same color. The carpet is an antelope print (that's what it's called but it's really an axis deer print, same as the skin on the coffee table)with brown in it. My punches of color are the pillows on the sectional. They're all the same style pillow in brick red, sage green, brownish green, orange, dark brown and gold. Even the tile is close in color and dark brown wood coffee table and end tables. This is the only picture I can find...oh, AND the ceiling in this large room is wood too. I think it's a personal preference whether or not you think it's too much of the same color. We've got a 10 foot long white Austin Chopped stone fireplace (goes all the way to the ceiling) that breaks up the color and plenty of other accessories on the walls (plus 10 windows). Monotone-ish den Vaulted ceiling Couch. We've had THREE couches in this den in 9 years :o The first leather sectional broke (handle) and was replaced under an extended warranty. The second leather set, I never liked. It was uncomfortable and too formal looking for our room. The third time was the charm and it's NOT leather. It's our favorite by far! We have two grandchildren that are here as often as they can talk their momma into letting them come over LOL At least 3 days a week. Even tho food and drink isn't allowed in there and shoes are supposed to come off at the door, stuff happens. Hands don't get wiped or they'll sneak a leaky sippy cup in there while I'm not looking. This is some kind of microfiber that at first glance and especially at a distance, looks like leather. A wipe with a damp microfiber cloth is all it takes to clean it. It's definitely a miracle fabric :) And the baby on the couch...he's the best accessory :)...See MoreChoosing the right white for cabinets..need some help
Comments (2)Glaze is currently not in fashion. But our motto on GW is always to get "what you love". That said, sometimes people are disappointed in how the glaze turns out. So be careful if you go this route to choose a company with a high success rate. Also, you need to see how the white plays off in your own kitchen. I have BM White Dove, some here have said it is creamy. In my kitchen it reads bright white. What color white you get depends on what direction you want to go with your kitchen. For example, with bright white, you would not want to go with a brown counter. There is a current thread where people are posting their kitchens. You can also go to the Finished Kitchen blog here although some there are not curent. Take the Sweeby test. This can help you decide if you like cool or warm. My own advise to to try to have a basic vision of your three elements:the color of the cabinets, the color and type of counter and the backsplash. This is not cut in stone, but you can avoid the mistake that many of us have made. When it comes to the backsplash, many of us become a "deer in headlights!" Some have taken months and years to do the backsplash....See MoreHelp choosing flooring color
Comments (19)"Shead, the price for real wood would mean we'd have to take out the laminate, plus the tile underneath it, and then prep the floor with a moisture barrier. Then the price per square foot for wood is a couple of dollars higher than the laminate. So, it would be almost double the price, and we have a pool, so we have to deal with water being tracked in, and the the flooring would be in the kitchen where my husband and 1.5 year old constantly splatter/spill water." I see. Removing tile is a PITA. We've only installed LVT over concrete or subfloor in applications where we needed a true budget flooring (DH did the install in a basement and in a mobile home on our farm). Is it safe to install over laminate that's bubbling and pealing. DH's aunt installed it over tile so I know that's fine....See Morelindastein
