Snow!!
Comments (70)I can share in your frustrations! We had three snow storms in April... the first one dumped 26" (~60cm), then when that had just begun to melt, we got another 12" (30cm). Then we thought, okay, finally, spring is here... and on April 26th we got 14" (35cm)! It was our snowiest April on record by a long shot and there are still snowbanks around town and the ice is still on the lakes. The good news? The evergreens sighed relief and have greened up nicely, the pussy willows have done their thing, and my tulips are growing just fine! I went to the garden center today and they had all sorts of tempting things wheeled out on carts. I got some Hostas, geraniums, some spring bulbs, and a plum bush... Now I just have to be patient. I can't count out several more deep freezes before the end of the month this year!...See MoreWhat's a good type of snow shovel?
Comments (55)Sorry to hear about your shoulder surgery too, DTD. I'm sure you will make a lot of progress with PT and hopefully be ready for the gardening season in the spring. Sounds like you picked the right time to have your surgery and recovery. :-) I was just looking over this thread again. This year, we are thinking along the line Bill is thinking tooâ¦lol My husband does all the shoveling lately but this year he's dealing with Tendonitis on his elbow and even using the electric shovel, is problematic. It has to be lifted and moved often enough to become a problem when your arm is not 100%. And even the adaptations for shovels for ergonomics don't seem to be workable. So as much as I enjoy the snow, we're really glad we haven't had much of it so far too....See MoreBlast from the past - 2000 'Get to know each other' thread
Comments (3)Wow....what an amazing list of people.... too many of them no longer with us or active here. It is nice to remember some of their names and their struggles that we shared. Thanks for the memories....See MoreUgh, migraines and 15 characters
Comments (59)Cran, I am sorry to hear you have lupus. I hope yours is in remission. Mine presently is and it makes such a difference! I had a very long remission, 27 years until my stroke. For years I needed only survalance after initially, at 23, needing prednisone for kidney issues. Insoluble fiber acts just like resistance starch. So, I saw Dr. Kreigel' team at Yale but he recently left to work with Roche to develop possible treatment or vaccine for lupus so now I see a colleague of his. It is very hard to alter our flora but studies of high fiber diets and lower sugar were proven to work for matabolic syndrome, i.e. Type 2 diabetes, so it was suggested I beef up my fiber intake to atleast 20 grams a day. I eat two cups of all bran with unsweetened rice milk every day and have a bowl of steel cut oats for an afternoon snack to hit almost 30 grams of fiber. The rest of my diet is normal fruit, fish, veggies, yogurt, some treats, potatoes and pasta so the bran and oats are the change I made. Resistance starch is in pasta and potatoes and many other foods. Pasta and potatoes cooled after cooking are supposedly higher in resistance starch than heated is. Yams are a good source. I like to use food sources more than supplements. High fiber, low fat and sugar diets are proven to help maintain health and diverse gut bacteria. Fiber, (resistance starches) are considered prebiotics which feed the good bacteria while sugar and fat feed the unhealthier ones. Also have your vitamin d regularly checked. Insufficiency is linked to higher lupus and Antiphospholipid antibodies and thus flares. I now supplement for mine was low. xo...See Moreskibby (zone 4 Vermont)
