Need to Purchase a DVD Recorder/Player

I want to purchase a recorder to record the new season of Game of Thrones. The discs I have are Memorex DVD+R. I have no idea what type of recorder to purchase. Any suggestions/thoughts would be appreciated.

To each his/her
own...but I wouldn’t bother. You can decide for yourself after
reading this.

I was given a JVC
DVD Recorder in 2010 and used it successfully for approx 7 years.
During the 8th year I began to experience many recording
failures. My opinion is that the machine was responsible for
some...but not all...of the failures. I particularly wanted to record
movies from TCM. After several failures, I began to understand that
my cable company had begun to prevent recording of certain channels.
This was a deal-breaker for me. When the machine would no longer play
discs I had previously recorded, I threw it away.

I made an attempt to
buy another DVD Recorder, but none of the ones I could find then had
a built-in tuner like mine did. I would’ve had to find a
third-party tuner to even attempt to make them work.

Even if you do find
something that you think will work for you, I advise that you check
out possible copy-protection on whatever source/channel you plan to
record from. Considering that you want to record GoT, I will be very
surprised if you are able to do it. Please let me know if I’m
wrong.

Online videos hanging could well be to do with your connection to your provider. When watching a video that starts to hang just click the pause button for a few seconds to allow the buffer to build. You should see the cache continue to build then click to play again. While it does not correct the DVD problem you might consider an external DVD player/burner. Some listed below to give you a price spread. Did you try anything that Bob suggested above? Is the Time Warner program a full anti virus and anti malware combination or purely anti virus? First things first. No matter how much you spend, what you record is not going to be any better than the original. Yeah, there might be a little tweaking you can do with contrast and the like, but you will not make a DVD copy of a VHS tape which will look much better than the tape. The keys there then become the quality of the VHS tape player and the tape itself, with the tape itself being the most limiting factor. Tape quality is affected by the original formulation of the tape, how the tapes were used and stored, etc. At this point, there is little you can do about any of that. Let's just assume that the tapes you have are good enough to view and to transfer. If you already have a VHS player which has a picture you like, I would use it. You won't gain much at all by buying a new combo unit. If you have to buy a VHS player, you could consider a combo unit (though I'd check the owner's manual just to make sure you can copy from tape to DVD without problems; I've never done this myself and I'm not sure what the tape copy protection [if any] might do when recorded onto a disk). One thing to consider is the quality of the DVD itself. There is a growing concern about the longevity of DVDs and CDs. "Bargain-basement" or "free-after-rebate" disks often won't hold a valid signal after as short as six months. This is too much work to repeat in a year or two. Make sure you buy high-quality disks from companies like Imation, TDK, Maxell, etc. That will help insure that your disk copies live longer. And get "record-once" DVDs, not rewritable ones. That will help them live longer, too. As for the unit at Target, I'd be leery of why it was returned. A decent name-brand DVD burner goes for about $100; there's little point IMHO to buying a returned one for $50 and spending more on an extended warranty.

I am sorry i seem to have been a bit misinformed i was surer i was right ,but the older 1.0,and 1.1 should still play futur discs it will just lack the full use of special features,i just read this article on cnet. (The easiest way to avoid all these headaches is to buy a Profile 2.0 player, which is currently the most future-proof option there is. In particular, we recommend the PS3--not only is it the best Blu-ray player according to our reviews, but it also has traditionally been updated with new features before other Blu-ray players. Additionally, because the PS3 has such a fast processor inside, we've found that special features just work better, with faster load times and smoother playback. If you're the kind of person that never fiddles with special features and you've found a great deal on a Profile 1.1 player, there's no reason not to buy it as long as you know what you're giving up. Profile 1.1 players should have no problems playing back future Blu-ray movies, you're just won't be able to get additional content online. Folks, I have some unique needs, although you've probably heard them all before. Here is the info: 1) I get my TV input via Cablevision. 2) I think I want a DVD recorder with a Hard drive that will also make DVDs. 3) I also want to make DVDs from video that I shoot with a SONY HC-42. Can I edit that video on my computer? 4) I want to be able to show the DVDs on the TV that the recorder is hooked to as well as another TV as well as my laptop which has a DVD-ROM Module. 5) I only have 2.75 inches of height available on a shelf for the DVD recorder 6) I also want recommendations for a combo DVD/VCR player for the other TV. 7) It's all for occasional use. I'm not a big fan of TV nor music and I think Tivo is waste of money for my sporadic use. Does all this make sense and can you offer some suggestions. Thanks.... and have a wonderful holiday season. I had a Sylvania one for many years I was using up until 2yrs ago. It was a VCR/DVD recorder. I had basic cable no cable box. Then when our cable switched to another provider and they went digital I was now required to get a cable box so got a DVR one from them and I have to say it's much nicer. I don't have to worry about disks and can set recordings from my phone. I didn't even know they still made DVD recorders. I am told you can by stand alone hard drive type recording boxes like you get from the cable company so maybe check into that. I use to record many things from HBO and such for my own use to watch later then erase. Never gave it a thought but I wasn't sharing what I recorded. Mary

You'll be able to buy the BluRay set for $50 or less when it comes out with much better quality than a DVD, and a fancy package and extras. I wouldn't spend a cent on a DVD recorder. If this is for long term and you really want the hard copy media, then buy the discs when they come out. if it's for short term, invest in a DVR system for ease of use, and the future.

Thank you all for your insights. The reason I wanted to record GoT is so my granddaughter's would be able to view the episodes. They work and will not be home with the show comes on.

Now, though, I am thinking I will just wait and do as Steve J suggested.

If you are subscribing to HBO you should be able to watch the episodes in the app after they air. We have HBO as part of our cable package so I can just use on demand on my TV. The app I have to log in with my cable provider. Even if you subscribe to HBO stand alone I would think you have the option of using the app. Mary
