New Exterior/Painted Brick - Do you like?
Comments (27)WOW kgibbins, that is ab-fab! I would have been one of the nay-sayers, but with that color brick I can't say that I blame you for going out on the limb, and boy did it pay off! Brilliant painting the gutters black! Yep, I'm in Texas and when I saw the before pic I thought "hmmm, there are about 10,000 houses just like that a few miles from me", LOL! I wouldn't say that about your house now, though, good job!...See MoreNeed help on making exterior look more modern and new!
Comments (7)I dont know about "modern" and "new" - would visually cohesive and attractive be good enough? Change some or all of the white (esp bay windows) to earthier, richer color that blends in with the brick instead of contrasting so strongly. You might start with looking closely at the brick and get paint samples to match some of the various browns/grays/reds in the brick.... and then maybe darker/grayer shade of whatever color you choose for the garage door. Some paint stores have color consultants who come out to your house, in exchange for buying x amount of paint. The brick is fine - its a nice variegated pattern. Its too bad people end up with stark white with red brick, because its not the most complementary color for it. I think because so many pre-made things like storm windows and gutters are white, ev else ends up being white by default. Sill, I think just getting the garage door, bay and the brick to all relate better to ea. other colorwise will do wonders. What color is the roof?...See MoreHelp needed updating exterior of brick home. Not painting brick.
Comments (26)"Ideally, a primary or entry walkway should be at least 48" wide and even wider is [often] better." I concur 100%. Another consideration in addition to sheer usability, is that a walk's width needs to coordinate with the building architecture ... size being one of those characteristics. This walk does that in that it is equal to the full width of the opening at the porch. My guess is that the walk is 5' 4". I have no arbitrary opposition to straight walks, thinking that many of them are equal to curved walks in their potential to be beautiful. From what we are shown in the picture, either seems like it could work well. It would probably only be worth the expense of changing it if a person developed a compulsion about it, as compulsions cannot be explained by reason alone....See MoreHelp! Need new exterior look for this Tudor style house
Comments (7)The overall look of your house is Tudor, but it has a lot of other elements tacked on that make it a mix of different styles. Thank the builder gods that you don't have a humongous double garage facing the front. Do not paint stone or brick or you'll be stuck with maintenance forever. Do not add shutters, which will add yet another style element to this blend of different styles. (The house below does have a double pair, though, if you're bent on them.) I'm not sure you can "update" something that doesn't have a single style. The current color actually does pull the stone and brick together. If you want the Tudor style to stand out, them do what Housson suggests picking a shade of the roof color for the timbers. Your stone entrance could use a little more drama with much larger light sconces. It's a shame the landscaping doesn't enhance the house as much as it could. A curved walkway farther out so that you could have more dramatic planting beds would have set off the house more impressively. What you have is fine but more suited to a smaller house....See Morehousegal200
