Need help on making exterior look more modern and new!

As the title says, looking for ideas to improve the look of this home without breaking the bank. I plan on removing the shutters and repainting the garage door. Not a huge fan of the brownish brick either. All ideas appreciated, thanks.

Comments (13)Asking a professional to give you his time for free for a consultation that you should have had (and paid for) with your own architect is foolish at this late date. It's also borderline rude to ask him to donate his professional services to you in a private consult when that is how he puts the bread on his table. It's like asking a doctor at a party to listen to this nagging cough that you've had for a couple of months. Your own architect is the one that should be on the hook to fix this mess. Since you asked for opinions, here goes: Shed roof dormers instead of the gabled dormers would be more appropriate for a Craftsman style home. Eliminate the sad inappropriate attempt at a Palladian window. 6 over 1 windows and cedar shingles would also be more appropriate. Eliminate the shutters entirely. You need much more substantial sized support columns for the porch--and fewer in number. Stone for the columns would add a nice natural accent. Even with doing all of that, you still will have only have some Craftsman styling on a modern home. You'd have to do a substantial redrawing of the whole structure from your architect to achieve a true Craftsman style home. For example, the roof pitch would have to be lowered and the rafter tails become part of the signature style of the home. You need to emphasize a strong horizontal line in the home's design rather than the verticality that the present design exhibits. Comments (7)The overall look of your house is Tudor, but it has a lot of other elements tacked on that make it a mix of different styles. Thank the builder gods that you don't have a humongous double garage facing the front. Do not paint stone or brick or you'll be stuck with maintenance forever. Do not add shutters, which will add yet another style element to this blend of different styles. (The house below does have a double pair, though, if you're bent on them.) I'm not sure you can "update" something that doesn't have a single style. The current color actually does pull the stone and brick together. If you want the Tudor style to stand out, them do what Housson suggests picking a shade of the roof color for the timbers. Your stone entrance could use a little more drama with much larger light sconces. It's a shame the landscaping doesn't enhance the house as much as it could. A curved walkway farther out so that you could have more dramatic planting beds would have set off the house more impressively. Comments (2)How much do you want to spend? or DIY? The carport is the overwhelming feature right now. Do you need it as a carport, or are you open to converting it to another use, like a sunroom or even just a covered porch? I think one thing that might work to reduce the impact of the carport but still keep it, is to remove the large filled in triangle below the carport roof, and replace it with a few horizontal wood beams, either stained or painted. Add some MCM looking wood trim around the doors and windows too, stained or painted to match. Add some stone looking cladding to match the house on the support columns. Comments (15)@kjr0625 - before you change things, have an architect design the changes and create some renderings. I fear that removing the vertical lines will make that front look really boring and sparse, and it's worth the extra money to be able to really see how it's going to look before you actually do it. Personally, I think those lines are the best feature of that house and I would love to see it preserved. An architect could help you come up with other ideas that might make you happy. Of course it's your home so you should feel free to do what you want! @Patricia Colwell It also in not MCM but a great example of a 80's contemporary house stay true to that era for sure. 6 years agoI picked a non-white neutral for the doors and the bay , took the muntins out of the windows, the shutters down, and got rid of the raised beds and cut back the tall shrubbery a bit. It's messy but I think it shows that you can reduce the prominence of the bay without removing it.
