Emperor One Red Japanese Maple...can I move this?
Comments (6)I always find it interesting to read the different perspectives of other members. Gardengal, I had to laugh at your response to Ken. I was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to argue as I'm sure everyone else here is far more educated than I on the subject matter, and I do appreciate EVERYONES opinion. LOL. I was watering with a hose 1x weekly for about an hour or so on a slow drip, maybe more during drier weather. I don't typically check the soil, I usually just look to see if it's soaking in or running off as my indicator, but in this case the underplanting of lamium is a total groundcover. In my own admission, I neglected to water it earlier in the season (spring), and it's wedged between a concrete walk, concrete drive, and a flagstone walkway installed in recent years, and surrounded by virginia flagstone as a border, so the tree really doesn't get much "runoff" rainwater. I was told by the nursery that watering it 1x weekly for an hour on a slow drip was probably too much. The bottom line, I think its a combination of too much sun, lack of water, the leaves were first curling on the edges and getting crispy, and more recently dropping after they dried to a crisp. Soil is clay. My bigger question really is can I move this without killing the tree, and I do plan to move it to a shadier area. I don't recall the exact size of the rootball at the time of planting...I believe the tree was a container planting, not a root ball, and it grew nicely last year. To answer questions, the tree was planted early spring last year, if I remember correctly. It did ok last year, but then again we didn't have as dry a summer as this year. My intention is to transplant this to make room for a false spirea shrub which will flourish in full sun. I'm assuming we should dig as wide as possible to avoid knicking the roots. How deep I wonder?...See Morecan i move my tie dye clematis?
Comments (1)Scootini, your Tie Dye will be FINE if you move it now. Since you had planted it, it would NOT have had the chance to yet produce many new roots. Just the same, do be careful when you do dig! Terry...See MoreI was moving daylilies around today
Comments (14)I plan on having a 'work day' this weekend if the weather holds as promised. I will pick up the wood for framing the raised bed tonight or tomorrow, already have the dirt at home, just waiting for the 10 day Roundup clearance to end. I am only putting smaller flowers (16-26") up along the front walk in raised beds. Once I move them up to the front, I can plant the new taller ones in the older beds. I like Todd Monroe and have been trying to decide if it or Siloam Shocker will go. They look too much alike and I have limited room. I think Todd will win as it is a rebloomer. I had a seedling I meant to evict, but forgot to mark which of two plants it was-and I don't want to toss the wrong one, so it may end up there until next year. Other evictions/overgrowns are going out to the holding bed at Dad's for next years spring plant sale-that's where I get my flower money! Once I get that done, I am hoping to have one segment of the back bed cleared so I can add things to the soil as it is full of clay there and the daylilies aren't fond of it. Then in the spring, I can cross things from the other side of the back bed and amend that side of the bed. Will probably drive husband crazy by then. :)...See MoreI Went to visit my KD today. Comments (28)Commenting on the skills and tools to make frameless cabinets: Our local community college has the best furniture making/wood working program in the west, maybe more than that. They actually call it Cabinet and Furniture Technology. One of the things they offer is a certificate program in making cabinets. Framed and frameless cabinetry making are totally different classes with separate and unique building techniques. Each has some specialized tools for that type of cabinetry only. The head of the department has aggressively pursued state of the art for 20 or more years and is a kitchen cabinet maker himself. He got the European makers of the big machinery needed for frameless cabinetry to donate the pieces to the school so that there would be trained frameless cabinet makers out there, a win-win. I never took that class, but I saw the machinery being used - we're talking stuff that takes up a lot of floor space, significantly bigger than large stationary table saws. You know all those holes they put in for adjustable shelves? There's a machine that makes whole sets of those holes so they'll be perfectly spaced. You need to train on the machine to make it come out right. The guy beekeeperswife talked to has never trained in this technology and doesn't own these very expensive tools. I can see that he maybe wouldn't want to be totally up front about that. The rest of the world has gone to frameless because their native wood supplies are not what they once were. By using "furniture board" with the good stuff laminated onto the outside, less premium wood is needed. As consumers, we care more about look and function in our space, but it's good to see the bigger picture sometimes....See Moreprairiemoon2 z6b MA
