Late fee/deposit dilemma
Comments (4)I disagree with wellim. 10% of a months rent for most people is a lot of money. First things first. Ask her for your 10% back. Nicely. What is she going to say? The rental agreement seems pretty clear, and your check cleared on the 10th. So, no late fee. I have rethought my original advise. I would not deduct it from your rent check. Kind of a two-wrongs don't make a right situation. If she really won't give it back to you, and it means enough to you, you should be able to file a claim (without needing a lawyer) with whatever tenants rights organization exists in your state. It doesn't cost you anything, but puts your landlord at risk for a big penalty, so she'll probably pay up. In most states, the laws STRONGLY protect tenants over landlords. You should have a good case. I once went to the State Labor commission because I felt my ex-employeer owed me about $500. It was a bit of a pain in the rear, required many visits to the labor commission, and many phone calls. But not only did I get my $500, but I got a $500 penalty awarded to me. Was all that trouble worth $1000? For me it was, because I learned alot about our legal system. C...See MoreAre these deposit terms reasonable?
Comments (12)For those of us who bought cabinets from Big Box, we paid 100% at time of order. This is cabs only as we did our own install. Even if Big Box arranges your installation, the entire price of the cabs is due when you order. Tile was also 100% at time of order from Arizona Tile. Tile (it's all special order) only takes a few days to come in, but your installation for tile is way down the road, so your arrangement makes sense to me. I believe our granite was 50% at order and 50% after installation. Our granite place did their own fabrication, so the cost of materials and labor were combined. I wouldn't be comfortable paying so much for cabinet installation up front. If you are just now ordering cabinets, the labor part isn't going to happen for another 6 weeks or so. Why do they want so much so soon?...See MoreContractor/painter asking for a $1,500 non-refundable deposit.
Comments (6)I don't think you are at the deposit point. We are close to the finish line on a full reno that included removing a wall, demoing the entire kitchen, moving utilities, changing an exterior door to a window, etc. Full reno. First we got a proposal and then it was $1500 for the design fee. That was for them to make the architectural designs. If we had left them the designs would be ours to keep. Then once we decided on a design, we paid another $1500 deposit for the contract process to move forward and then upon signing the final contract with everything laid out and negotiated, we paid the rest of the deposit for them to order our cabinets and start the demo. I wouldn't pay any money yet as you are not renoing so don't need a full scale architectural design. Nail down what you will be doing through them first. Are you still planning to paint it all white?...See MoreFloor installer installed floors right up to base of my refrigerator
Comments (4)I have no idea without at least a picture but I have had this issue with a granite floor and a DW we actull had to chisel out the floor tile to remove the DW thank goodness the old owner had some tiles left over. Next time get contractors who know what they are doing. I think you will need to remove some flooring to get the fridge out since it is a built in...See MoreJennifer Svensson
