Splitting a hosta without digging it up.

Hosta Collector

In the depth of winter, I recall a watching a video showing a technique for cutting between the eyes and leaving the hosta in the ground. The idea being that it would lead to more eyes forming. Interesting to me because last year I planted over a hundred hostas in area much smaller than would be needed for the mature plants i.e. a grow out bed. I'm more interested in production because I want to then transplant them over a larger area to eliminate an area where I would have such problems growing grass. Looking few years out to cover the area I want. I can't recall exactly where I saw the video or who it was. I think it was called "crown splitting" but Googling the term is difficult because of all the more traditional hits you would get. Can anyone provide details about the technique?

Thanks for any help.
